A Surprise Comeback: Absentia Finds New Life on Netflix
Once overlooked during its original run, Absentia is now surging in popularity on Netflix, landing a spot among the streaming giant’s most-watched shows this week. Known for its gripping plot and emotional twists, the psychological crime thriller has gained a fresh wave of viewers thanks to its recent addition to Netflix’s library.
The series follows FBI Special Agent Emily Byrne, played by Stana Katic, who disappears while tracking a notorious serial killer. After being declared dead in absentia, she reemerges six years later determined to reclaim her family and reputation—while facing suspicion as the main suspect in a series of new murders. The ensemble cast features Neil Jackson, Natasha Little, Paul Freeman, Patrick McAuley, and Christopher Colquhoun.
Originally airing on Prime Video, Absentia ran for three seasons before concluding in 2020. Katic, in a heartfelt 2021 Instagram post, reflected on the journey from “victim to survivor to empowered architect of her own future,” stating the story reached its natural end with season three.
