The entertainment world is buzzing as production officially moves into high gear for the upcoming psychological thriller Pumping Black. New images from the set have surfaced, offering fans their first real look at Jonathan Bailey in a role that promises to be a stark departure from his previous work. Known for his charismatic presence in the period drama Bridgerton and his highly anticipated roles in Wicked and Jurassic World: Rebirth, Jonathan Bailey is now trading Regency-era finery and fantasy landscapes for the grueling, oil-slicked world of professional competitive cycling.

A New Direction for Jonathan Bailey

In the newly released snapshots from the production, Jonathan Bailey is seen fully immersed in the character of Taylor Mace. The 35-year-old protagonist is a veteran of the cycling circuit who finds himself at a precarious crossroads. As he nears the traditional age of retirement for professional athletes, Taylor Mace is unwilling to let go of his career or the adrenaline of the race.

The visual transformation for the role is striking. Jonathan Bailey was spotted sporting a distinctive bowl-cut hairstyle and a vibrant red Lycra bodysuit, the standard uniform for long-distance racers. One particularly evocative image captures the actor in a moment of scripted triumph, celebrating at a finish line and embracing a teammate amidst the roar of a simulated crowd. This physical commitment highlights the intense preparation required to portray a character whose life is defined by physical endurance and the relentless pursuit of victory.

A Powerhouse Creative Team

Pumping Black is being helmed by director Mimi Cave, who previously garnered critical acclaim for the sharp and unsettling thriller Fresh. Her involvement suggests that the film will lean heavily into visceral, psychological territory rather than being a standard sports biopic. The screenplay is penned by Haley Hope Bartels, whose script has been described by insiders as a “dangerous and adrenaline-fueled” exploration of ambition.

Joining Jonathan Bailey in a leading capacity is Academy Award winner Natalie Portman. In this project, Natalie Portman portrays Andrea Lathe, a medical professional who crosses paths with Taylor Mace as he prepares for the ultimate challenge: the Tour de France. The two characters reportedly share a symbiotic, perhaps even toxic, hunger for dominance and success. While specific plot points remain closely guarded, the film explores the lengths to which an athlete will go to protect their legacy and the secrets they are willing to keep to stay on top.

An Elite Ensemble Cast

The production has assembled a diverse and talented supporting cast to populate the competitive world of Pumping Black. Joining the lead duo are Lukas Gage, known for his standout performance in The White Lotus, and Alex Akpobome, a rising star from the series Industry. The cast also includes Daniel Quinn-Toye, recently seen in Sterling Point, along with veteran comedic and dramatic actor Tony Hale. Rounding out the international ensemble are Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen and Arieh Worthalter, ensuring a global perspective for a story centered on an international sport.

Insights from the Producers

The project is a collaborative effort involving high-profile producers, including Mimi Cave, Natalie Portman, Stacey Sher, Sophie Mas, and Sébastien Raybaud. Upon the project’s initial announcement, Stacey Sher expressed immense enthusiasm for the narrative’s unique perspective. She noted that the script immediately immersed the team in a world that felt both original and deeply unsettling.

Stacey Sher also praised the casting of Jonathan Bailey, stating that his immense talent made him the ideal choice to embody the complexities of Taylor Mace. The collaboration between the production company MountainA and the creative vision of Mimi Cave aims to deliver a film that challenges the conventions of the thriller genre while providing a gritty, realistic look at the pressures of elite athleticism.

Anticipation and Release

While a formal release date for Pumping Black has not yet been announced, the arrival of these first-look images indicates that filming is progressing steadily. As Jonathan Bailey continues to rise as one of Hollywood’s most versatile leading men, his pairing with Natalie Portman in such a dark, high-octane setting is already positioning Pumping Black as a must-watch title for cinephiles and sports enthusiasts alike.
