As the countdown to the reassembly of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes begins, Marvel enthusiasts are mapping out their viewing schedules. With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, Disney+ has introduced a specialized tool to ensure the audience is fully briefed on the narrative stakes. The streaming platform has officially launched the “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” playlist, a curated selection of titles designed to bridge the gap between past adventures and the upcoming epic.

Directed by the veteran filmmaking duo Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday represents the critical penultimate chapter of the ongoing Multiverse Saga. This cinematic event will lead directly into the highly anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars, which is slated for a December 17, 2027, debut. The upcoming film is set to be a massive milestone, featuring Robert Downey Jr. in a transformative role as the villainous Doctor Doom. The production aims to weave together storylines and characters spanning more than two decades of Marvel’s presence on the silver screen.

A Visual Guide to the Multiverse

The new playlist, recently highlighted by MCU Film News on social media, utilizes a color-coded system to assist subscribers. Essential films required to grasp the plot of Avengers: Doomsday are highlighted in green within the Disney+ interface. This visual aid simplifies the process for viewers who may feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content within the Marvel library.

This refined selection expands upon a preliminary list of 15 titles that Disney+ originally revealed in August. That collection consists of 14 feature films and a single pivotal television series. Among the foundational stories listed as mandatory viewing are X-Men, X2, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

The list also prioritizes more recent entries and character-specific arcs, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. To ensure fans are ready for the immediate future of the franchise, the selection incorporates Captain America: Brave New World, Deadpool & Wolverine, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

The Strategic Importance of the Selection

The inclusion of specific titles sheds light on the projected scope of Avengers: Doomsday. By featuring the first two entries of the original Fox X-Men franchise at the top of the list, Marvel suggests that the mutant population will have a significant impact on the upcoming conflict. Additionally, the inclusion of Captain America: The First Avenger and the original 2012 The Avengers serves as a necessary refresher on the core legacies of the franchise’s most iconic figures.

Notably, Loki stands as the sole Disney+ original series on the essential list. Across its two seasons, the Tom Hiddleston-led show established the complex mechanics of the multiverse and the concept of timeline branches—elements that are now the bedrock of the current saga.

Fan Debates and Missing Links

Despite the official nature of the list, the Marvel community remains divided over certain omissions. Many fans have pointed out the glaring absence of the Iron Man trilogy. Given that Robert Downey Jr. was the face of that trilogy and is now returning to play the central antagonist, his original character’s journey is seen by many as vital context.

Furthermore, some viewers expressed surprise that X-Men: Days of Future Past was excluded. Critics of the list argue that this specific film is arguably the most important X-Men entry, as it fundamentally altered the timeline of the original trilogy. Other notable exclusions that have sparked discussion include The Marvels and the recent series Agatha All Along.

A Comprehensive Marketing Push

The Disney+ playlist is just one facet of a broader promotional campaign. Marvel has also released a comprehensive digital watch guide on its official website, framed as a way for audiences to familiarize themselves with the multidimensional cast. To further immerse fans, the studio has debuted an official “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” podcast, which complements a live ticking clock on their digital platforms.

These efforts suggest that Marvel is treating the December 18 release as a “must-see” event that requires a degree of “homework.” Because Avengers: Doomsday serves as the direct precursor to Avengers: Secret Wars, the stories highlighted in this playlist will likely remain relevant for the next three years. For fans looking to witness the final chapters of the Multiverse Saga, the next two months provide the perfect window to revisit these 15 essential titles.
