The highly anticipated BBC drama Dear England tells the compelling story of Gareth Southgate’s journey as the England football team’s manager, bringing to life the pivotal moments that captured the nation’s attention. Joseph Fiennes takes on the lead role of Southgate, reprising his performance from James Graham’s acclaimed stage play of the same name. The series explores how Southgate transformed the team’s fortunes and revitalized English football’s competitive spirit.

The Creative Vision and Key Cast Members

Screenwriter James Graham has masterfully adapted his own theatrical work for television, crafting a narrative that delves into the psychological and managerial challenges faced by Southgate during his tenure. The production brings together an impressive ensemble cast that includes both established actors and emerging talents.

Jodie Whittaker stars as Pippa Grange, the sports psychologist who became a crucial addition to the Football Association under Southgate’s leadership. Her character represents the innovative approaches and mental fortitude that distinguished Southgate’s management style from his predecessors.

Will Antenbring portrays Harry Kane, the England team’s captain and one of the most prominent figures in contemporary English football. The series features portrayals of numerous other well-known personalities from the football world, both within the squad and among the coaching staff and Football Association executives.

The Full Cast Lineup

The production boasts an extensive roster of performers bringing various key figures to life. Daniel Ryan takes on the role of Steve Holland, while Sam Spruell portrays Mike Webster. John Hodgkinson appears as Greg Clarke, and Jason Watkins embodies Greg Dyke. Andrew Dunn portrays Sam Allardyce, adding further football pedigree to the ensemble cast.

Bobby Schofield takes on the challenge of portraying Wayne Rooney, one of England’s most celebrated footballers. Kasper Hilton-Hille appears as Young Gareth Southgate, offering viewers insight into the manager’s earlier life. Crystal Condie portrays Emily, Gunnar Cauthery plays Dan, and Gerard Monaco appears as Physio Phil.

The younger generation of footballers is represented through Adam Hugill as Harry Maguire and David Shields as Jordan Henderson. Francis Lovehall portrays Raheem Sterling, while Lewis Shepherd takes on the role of Dele Alli. Hamish Frew appears as Eric Dier, Edem-Ita Duke portrays Marcus Rashford, and Josh Barrow takes on the part of Jordan Pickford between the goalposts.

Additional cast members include Xander Westcarr-Parsons as Jesse Lingard, Sam Baker Jones as Jack Grealish, Riess Fennell as Jadon Sancho, and Abdul Sessay portraying Bukayo Saka. Alfie Middlemiss appears as Phil Foden, Jacob Greenway takes on Jude Bellingham, Dom Rayner portrays Cole Palmer, and Daniel Quincy Annoh appears as Ollie Watkins.

The series also features Dirk Borchardt as German goalkeeping legend Andreas Köpke and Richard Sammel portraying Thomas Tuchel. Bailey Patrick plays Major Scotty Mills, while Flynn Allen appears as Flynn Southgate. Steven Mackintosh rounds out the principal cast as John Major.

Series Synopsis and Narrative Focus

The drama begins with Gareth Southgate inheriting what is widely regarded as the worst penalty record in international football. The synopsis highlights his determination to transform this psychological barrier and guide England back to former glory. The narrative emphasizes his willingness to embrace new approaches and challenge established thinking within the sport.

Southgate acknowledges the weight of history and the years of disappointment that preceded his appointment. The series explores how he worked to build a unified team culture while addressing the deep-seated issues that had plagued England’s major tournament performances for decades.

Dear England premieres on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday, May 24, with the second episode following the next day at the same evening time slot on Monday, May 25. The remaining two episodes conclude the miniseries on Sunday, May 31 and Monday, June 1.
