Crime Stories: India Detectives, a documentary series by Netflix provides an insight into the lives of our Indian Police personnel and throws light on various investigation processes carried out by them to nab the criminals by racing against deadlines and facing several stumbling blocks in finding out the truth.

There are four crime episodes, A Murdered Mother, Body In a Bag, Dying For Protection, and The Stolen Baby in the series capturing the finer aspects depicting various methods of investigation adopted by the policemen in cracking murder mysteries with great teamwork, dedicated mindset, fearlessness, and confidence that are quite exemplary.

Here, the challenges are different from what we see in our regular films where there will be a lot of drama, heroism, and several whistle-seeking sequences that get highlighted to attract the masses. But in real life, the cracking of a murder mystery like in the three stories or the missing child case in this documentary gets the topmost priority for every team member who toils very hard and spends many sleepless nights to apprehend the criminal. The brainstorming sessions they undergo along with the enquiry they do on the suspects, analyzing the shreds of evidences, and cross-verification of all kinds of clues or leads is not an easy thing as it needs a lot of patience and a positive mindset as rightly mentioned by Sub Inspector Roopa.

Set in Bengaluru, the actual video footages along with the comments by the real policemen Manoj Kumar M E, Assistant Commissioner of Police, M N Anucheth, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Latha Mahesh, Sub Inspector who cracks first murder mystery in her career, V Dhananjaya, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Roopa K S, Sub Inspector who investigates the case of a missing child which was her first child kidnap case, and above all, the dynamic N. Shashi Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police who was instrumental in solving three mysteries played a key role while doing the investigation have provided in-depth analysis of each case presenting the psyche of criminals and the modus operandi behind each crime.

Amongst all these, the murder case of a sex worker Manjula in the episode Dying For Protection was very heart-touching and the empathy shown by the police towards sex workers was quite laudable. The compassion showed by Sub Inspector Latha Mahesh who undergoes a change of opinion about sex workers after hearing their heart-rending stories was the touching point in the whole series.

The greed, insecurity, and extramarital relationships are the main reasons behind a murder which could be due to wealth, illegal affairs, and land or property dealings perpetrate the crime by an individual was very well explained by Manoj Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police while discussing why people resort to criminal activities which sometimes include the killing of other people.

All the incidents were very well captured with gripping visuals and outstanding background score by Antonio Pinto and Felipe Kim. The series produced by the Minnow Films founded by Morgan Mathews, the BAFTA winner who earlier produced the film Fallen and Bad Boy Billionaires from Netflix is going to create a precedence for many more such real docuseries to emerge in near future.

The series directed by Jack Warrender and co-directed by N Amit and Jack Rampling depicts the investigative methods followed by our police personnel and the presence of real criminals heightens the authenticity of the series.

It’s not just another normal documentary on crime or police with fictitious characters and engineered incidents, Crime Stories: India Detectives presents some real darkest crimes and the cumbersome investigation process that was undertaken to solve these cases with the only motto of ‘We Save, We Protect’ by the illustrious Bengaluru Police.

Crime Stories: India Detectives docuseries Season 1 is streaming on the popular digital platform Netflix in Hindi, English, Telugu, and Kannada languages.
