Nearly three decades after its groundbreaking debut, The Beatles Anthology is making a triumphant return — this time streaming in a newly restored edition on Disney+. Eight remastered episodes, plus a fresh chapter of behind-the-scenes content, invite both devoted fans and curious newcomers to revisit the legacy of the band that forever changed the music world. Whether you first watched it on VHS in the ’90s or are discovering it for the first time in 2024, this is your chance to rediscover the timeless story of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and John Lennon.

When the Anthology series first aired in 1995, it was a cultural event. Alongside albums packed with unreleased recordings and alternate versions of Beatles classics came a documentary series that mapped their journey from Liverpool streets to global superstardom. Through candid interviews with McCartney, Starr, and Harrison — recorded before Harrison’s passing in 2001 — and archival conversations with Lennon, the “official” narrative offered something fresh: never-before-seen footage, intimate moments, and authentic storytelling.

The new Disney+ release uses the longer eight-part format originally issued on home video in 1996, later released on DVD in 2003. Spanning the band’s humble beginnings, Hamburg club days, meteoric rise in Britain, Beatlemania’s U.S. explosion, and artistic evolution post-touring, each episode explores their creative peaks while skillfully balancing nostalgia with clarity.

Behind the Scenes

The true gem of this reissue is the ninth bonus episode — a rare look at private reunions between McCartney, Harrison, and Starr from 1991 to 1995. Viewers witness the trio revisiting old demo tapes, teasing each other, and reliving moments of joy and humor that shaped their dynamic. These sessions also birthed new takes on Lennon’s demos, resulting in “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” with “Now and Then” finally completed and released in 2023.

The footage — some of which appeared as DVD extras but much is new — captures unfiltered camaraderie. In one moving highlight, Harrison and McCartney harmonize on the chorus of “Real Love,” briefly resurrecting the magic of The Beatles. Even playful moments, like joking about future stadium tours, are tinged with warmth and poignancy.

Final Verdict

For long-time fans craving sharper visuals and expanded material, the difference between VHS-era quality and Disney’s remastered version is staggering. For younger audiences, it’s an unparalleled introduction to The Beatles’ history told in their own words. While it avoids deep controversies, the documentary’s richness lies in its performances, personal anecdotes, and the enduring chemistry between the surviving members.

The Beatles Anthology on Disney+ isn’t just a re-release — it’s a masterfully preserved time capsule. Whether you’re a completist chasing every frame or a first-time viewer, expect a captivating blend of music history, friendship, and artistry. And just as Ringo affectionately told Paul and George, “I like hanging out with you,” fans will feel exactly the same after spending these hours with The Beatles once more.
