Yoona is enjoying another triumph in her career. The Girls’ Generation star is receiving outstanding feedback for her portrayal in the newly launched tvN drama, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, where she takes on the role of a prestigious French chef who journeys back to the Joseon era.
The drama debuted with remarkable viewership figures, achieving the highest initial ratings for any Netflix drama airing on weekends this year. Its success extends beyond South Korea; as reported by the global streaming aggregator FlixPatrol, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty has ascended to the top spot on Netflix in 42 countries and has ranked among the Top 10 in 93 regions globally.
Yoona’s commitment to the role has garnered acclaim, as she undertook extensive preparation that involved cooking classes and training alongside professional chefs well before filming commenced. This dedication shone through in the first episode, where she captivated audiences by seamlessly delivering lengthy lines in French during a competitive cooking scene.
Director Jang Tae Yu commended her performance at the press conference, stating, “This role wasn’t something just any actor could tackle. It called for not only proficiency in historical dramas but also the authentic charisma of a chef. I longed for a star like Yoona, and by some stroke of fate, she became part of the project and prepared so thoroughly. It was truly impressive how much she accomplished on her own.”
Park Guk Jae, the writer of the original web novel, also expressed his admiration on social media, commenting, “I can’t imagine anyone more fitting for the role of Yeon Ji Young than Yoona,” and praising her perfect embodiment of the character.
Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is now streaming on the Netflix digital platform.
