What transpires when 20 celebrities are confined within a mansion, engaging in deceit, betrayal, psychological games, and manipulation? The answer is a reality show named The Traitors.
Derived from the Dutch series De Verraders and following successful runs in the UK and US, The Traitors is now making its debut in India, after its much awaited star-studded launch on Friday in Mumbai.
Prime Video India unveiled this high-profile show at Yash Raj Studios, with filmmaker and producer Karan Johar serving as the host. Karan, renowned for his role as a moderator in talk shows and award ceremonies, will take on a more subdued persona in this series where he presides over a group of 20 well-known individuals during their confinement in this reality setup. Among these ‘players’—as they are called on the show—three are designated as traitors, and ‘murder’ is a part of the elimination process.
“Trust is a rare commodity here. Betrayal lurks everywhere,” Karan remarked as he took to the stage during the launch. When questioned about what prompted him to accept the role of host for The Traitors, he humorously responded in his signature style, “I have been encountering traitors all my life. Who better to host a show called The Traitors?!”
At the event, the 20 contestants who will fiercely compete to be the last person standing were revealed. The lineup includes rapper Raftaar, entrepreneur Raj Kundra, and actors Karan Kundra, Jasmeen Bhasin, Elnaaz Nourozi, Lakshmi Manchu, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Sudhanshu Panday. Also featured are influencers and content creators Apoorva Makhija, Uorfi Javed, Sufi Motiwala, Jannat Zubair, Sahil Salathia, and Purav Jha. Additionally, casting director Mukesh Chhabra, comedian Harsh Gujral, and the aunt-niece duo of Maheep Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor are part of the cast. Rounding out the group are poker player Nikita Luther and tarot reader Janvee Gaurr.
“This is a reality show that is genuinely authentic, and for this, we required contestants with a high emotional quotient,” stated Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals at Prime Video, India.
The Traitors is set to premiere on June 12, with new episodes released every Thursday at 8 PM on Amazon Prime Video.
