The most enduring narratives are those that transcend their original era, proving themselves flexible enough to inhabit any setting, from Regency ballrooms to the far reaches of outer space. Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 masterpiece, Treasure Island, is the quintessential example of this phenomenon. Now, nearly a century and a half after its publication, the definitive swashbuckling epic is returning to its roots with a high-profile television adaptation.

A New Crew for a Classic Adventure

According to reports from Deadline, a major new series based on the classic novel is currently in development. Bringing significant “A-list” star power to the high seas, the production features an impressive ensemble cast including David Oyelowo, Hayley Atwell, and Jack Huston.

The project is structured as a co-production between MGM+ and Paramount+. While Paramount+ has secured the rights for the United Kingdom and Ireland, American audiences will likely find their way to the treasure on MGM+. For many US viewers, this series represents a major reason to dive into the streamer’s expanding library of premium dramas.

From Muppets to Deep Space: A Legacy of Adaptation

Since the dawn of cinema, Treasure Island has been a constant source of inspiration. The story has been reimagined in every imaginable format, beginning with a silent film in 1918 and continuing through Disney’s first live-action venture in 1950.

In more recent decades, however, the most prominent versions of Stevenson’s world have relied on fantastical gimmicks. In 1996, the Jim Henson Company delivered the cult classic Muppet Treasure Island, featuring Tim Curry’s legendary performance as Long John Silver. Disney experimented again in 2002 with the visually ambitious Treasure Planet, which traded ocean waves for solar sails. Even as recently as 2024, the Star Wars universe paid homage to the tale with Skeleton Crew, a series that utilized the novel’s narrative structure in a galaxy far, far away.

Returning to the Source

What makes this upcoming reboot particularly exciting for fans of the genre is its commitment to a straightforward, grounded interpretation. By stripping away the singing frogs and galactic droids, the series seeks to recapture the raw energy of the original coming-of-age story.

At its heart, Treasure Island is a universal tale of a young boy leaving the safety of home to navigate a world of deception, danger, and destiny. It is a narrative that requires no modern “hooks” to resonate with a modern audience; the inherent drama of buried gold and pirate betrayal provides more than enough substance.

While American viewers haven’t seen a major, plainly-titled adaptation since the 1999 film starring Jack Palance, this new big-budget production aims to prove that the original swashbuckler still has plenty of life left. Although a premiere date has yet to be announced, the arrival of this trio of A-list stars suggests that the wait for this definitive pirate drama will be well worth it.
