Thessaloniki Documentary Festival 2026 Announces Key Competition Lineup
The Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival (TIDF) has officially revealed the films selected for two of its most prestigious competitive sections at its 28th edition. Set to take place from March 5 to March 15 in Greece’s vibrant port city, the festival continues to champion daring storytelling and emerging cinematic voices from around the world.
This year’s spotlight shines on the Newcomers Competition and the Film Forward Competition, both of which carry notable financial awards and strong international visibility.
Newcomers Competition: Fresh Voices and Bold First Steps
Dedicated to emerging filmmakers, the Newcomers Competition features 14 documentaries exceeding 50 minutes in length. The section celebrates originality, personal vision, and artistic risk-taking from the next generation of documentarians.
Two major prizes anchor this category:
- Golden Alexander “Dimitri Eipides”, accompanied by a €10,000 cash award
- Silver Alexander, carrying a €4,000 cash prize
Among the selected titles are At No Cost, a socially grounded portrait of economic precarity in modern Athens; EXILE(S), Tales From an Island, a meditative exploration of memory and displacement on Imbros; and Tiny Gods, an intimate reflection on art, education, and inner worlds.
International perspectives also feature prominently. Norway’s Hex dives into female empowerment within the black metal scene, while In Cod We Trust paints a wry yet affectionate picture of life in an Arctic fishing village. From Germany and France comes Inner Emigrants, examining psychological resistance and moral conflict in contemporary Russia, and Just Look Up chronicles radical climate activism in the United States with urgency and grit. Mexico’s Motel Paradise blends documentary and fiction to craft a nostalgic, genre-inflected meditation on memory and mortality.
Film Forward Competition: Pushing the Boundaries of Documentary Cinema
The Film Forward section is reserved for works that defy convention and experiment boldly with cinematic form. Ten films will compete for the top honors in this strand.
Awards include:
- Film Forward Golden Alexander, with a €6,000 prize
- Film Forward Silver Alexander, awarding €3,000
This competition underscores the festival’s commitment to innovation, highlighting documentaries that challenge traditional narratives and expand the language of non-fiction cinema.
A Global Stage for Documentary Storytelling
With its carefully curated program and substantial prizes, the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival 2026 reaffirms its role as a major platform for global documentary cinema. From deeply personal stories to urgent political and social inquiries, this year’s selections promise a compelling and diverse festival experience.
