Netflix’s acclaimed political thriller The Diplomat continues to capture audiences worldwide. Season 3 premiered this week and immediately soared to the top of the streaming platform’s most-watched list. Following that success, Netflix officially confirmed that the series has been renewed for a highly anticipated fourth season. Here’s a full breakdown of which cast members are set to return, who’s departing, and what’s next for the hit show.

Keri Russell Returns as Kate Wyler

Leading star Keri Russell will reprise her role as Kate Wyler in Season 4. Russell’s portrayal of the sharp and composed diplomat has earned critical praise, and Netflix has confirmed her continued involvement in the coming season. She previously noted how much she enjoyed exploring Kate’s supportive leadership dynamic in Season 3 – a theme that may continue to evolve in the next chapter.

Rufus Sewell Back as Hal Wyler

Rufus Sewell is also set to return as Hal Wyler. The actor shared that Season 3 allowed him to explore a more vulnerable side of his confident character. Fans can expect more emotional complexity from Hal as the story progresses into Season 4.

Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford Promoted to Series Regulars

Season 4 will feature Allison Janney (Grace Penn) and Bradley Whitford (Todd Penn) as full-time series regulars. Both characters took on pivotal roles in the latest season, and their expanded presence promises to add new depth to the show’s political intrigue. Janney described her Season 3 scenes as intense and fast-paced, while Whitford hinted at evolving power dynamics between Todd and Grace that mirror larger diplomatic struggles.

Returning Faces

Several familiar faces are expected to appear once again, including Ali Ahn (Eidra Graham), Rory Kinnear (Nicol Trowbridge), David Gyasi (Austin Dennison), Ato Essandoh (Stuart Hayford), and Miguel Sandoval (Miguel Ganon). While Netflix has yet to provide formal confirmation for all of them, strong indications suggest their storylines will continue in the next installment.

Characters Not Returning

Sadly, fans will have to say goodbye to a few favorites. Celia Imrie’s character, Margaret “Meg” Roylin, met a tragic end in Season 3, and Michael McKean’s President Rayburn also died. Unless the writers employ flashbacks or dream sequences, both stars are unlikely to appear in Season 4.

What’s Next for The Diplomat

Production for Season 4 is rumored to begin soon, though Netflix has not yet announced an official release date. In the meantime, viewers can rewatch Seasons 1–3 on Netflix to revisit the show’s intricate political drama and character-driven storytelling.

With a mix of returning veterans, newly promoted regulars, and high-stakes narrative twists, The Diplomat Season 4 is shaping up to deliver another gripping chapter in Netflix’s acclaimed political saga.
