In an exciting development for fans of the beloved anime franchise, Netflix is set to produce a live-action feature film adaptation of Gundam, featuring prominent stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo in leading roles. This collaboration marks a significant moment for the franchise, which has captivated audiences since its inception.

Reports indicate that Netflix is in discussions to bring this much-anticipated project to life, with Legendary Pictures involved in the production. Legendary is also behind the upcoming star-studded film Street Fighter, suggesting a strong commitment to high-quality adaptations. Bandai Namco Filmworks, the owner of the Gundam franchise, is partnering with Legendary to ensure authenticity and depth in the film’s portrayal.

The live-action adaptation will be helmed by Jim Mickle, known for his work on Sweet Tooth, who will direct and co-produce the movie alongside Linda Moran through their production company, Nightshade. While details about the film’s plot and release date remain largely undisclosed, fans are eager to see how the iconic mecha battles and expansive universe of Gundam will be translated into live action.

According to Deadline, Netflix will take on the distribution of the film, promising stunning visual effects that will bring the epic space battles and giant robots to life in a way that resonates with both new audiences and long-time fans. The Gundam franchise has inspired numerous anime series and projects, and this film aims to elevate that legacy further.

Originally created in 1979 by Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam made its mark with a groundbreaking anime series that introduced the world to the “mecha” genre—stories centered around humans piloting giant robots. The franchise has since expanded to include over 80 animated shows and films, making it a significant part of global pop culture.

Sydney Sweeney is poised to take on a pivotal role in the film, with rumors suggesting her character may embark on a crucial mission tied to her family’s legacy, potentially involving themes of revenge or justice. This storyline is expected to have a romantic angle, reminiscent of star-crossed lovers caught in a conflict, further deepening the emotional stakes of the narrative.

Joining Sweeney is Noah Centineo, who is also set to appear in Street Fighter, where he will portray Ken Masters alongside Ryu. Centineo’s involvement in the Gundam project marks his second collaboration with Legendary Productions, solidifying his presence in high-profile adaptations.

Prior to Centineo’s casting, discussions were held with Drew Starkey from Outer Banks, but those negotiations did not come to fruition according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.

The narrative of the Gundam film is set in the Universal Century, a timeline where humanity has begun to colonize space due to overpopulation on Earth. As tensions rise between the colonies and Earth, conflicts erupt, leading to battles fought with massive robots known as mobile suits. The official synopsis describes the film as a continuation of the revered anime’s legacy, highlighting its role in pioneering the mecha genre.

With its storied history and rich universe, the live-action Gundam movie has the potential to introduce the franchise to a new generation while satisfying long-time fans. Enthusiasm is high as audiences await further updates regarding this monumental project, which promises to be a landmark in the realm of live-action adaptations.

Netflix has officially locked in a deal to release a live-action Gundam movie starring Sydney Sweeney
