Radhika Apte’s highly anticipated movie Sister Midnight is ready for its digital launch in India, following its debut for UK audiences on March 14. The film has garnered significant attention, showcasing Apte in one of her boldest performances. She stars alongside a talented cast that includes Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, and Smita Tambe.
Directed by Karan Kandhari, this dark comedy has already gained international accolades and critical praise. Sister Midnight was nominated for Outstanding British Debut at this year’s distinguished BAFTA Awards. It also received an enthusiastic reception at the celebrated Cannes Film Festival, where it earned a nomination for the Golden Camera and was featured in the Directors’ Fortnight section, highlighting its distinctive narrative and innovative cinematic voice. Following its global success, the film was briefly shown in select theaters across India in May 2025, giving local audiences a limited opportunity to experience it in cinemas.
In the UK, Sister Midnight had a subdued launch on OTT platforms, becoming accessible on a Video-on-Demand (VOD) basis via Apple TV, Prime Video, and Google Play. Distributor Altitude Films shared a glowing review from renowned American film critic Mark Kermode on Instagram, stating: “Very sharp. Very funny. Very surprising.” They further urged viewers with the message, “BAFTA-nominated SISTER MIDNIGHT is available to buy or rent on digital now!”
Even though the film had a restricted theatrical run in Indian cinemas on May 30, it has not yet been made available on any digital streaming service for Indian audiences. Nevertheless, according to media sources, the film is anticipated to make its online debut for Indian viewers quite soon, with Prime Video being the likely platform. An official announcement regarding the film’s Indian digital release is still awaited.
Set against the backdrop of Mumbai, Sister Midnight tells the poignant story of Uma, played by Radhika Apte, a young woman trapped in the confines of an uncomfortable arranged marriage. As feelings of loneliness and discontent consume her, Uma begins to confront increasingly wild and unrestrained desires, plunging her into a whirlwind of chaos, dark comedy, and madness. The film vividly depicts Mumbai’s landscape—from Marine Drive and Bandstand to the bustling local trains—while chronicling Uma’s journey into a realm where societal expectations, boredom, and personal turmoil intertwine in unexpected and often humorous ways.
