The South Korean film industry is buzzing with anticipation as three of its most celebrated performers—Lee Sung Min, Koo Kyo Hwan, and Yoon Kyung Ho—have officially signed on to headline the upcoming political crime thriller, Cartel. This high-profile project promises to be a significant addition to the landscape of gritty, historical dramas in Korean cinema.

Behind the Camera: A Visionary Director

Directing duties for Cartel have been entrusted to Uhm Yu Na. Known for her masterful screenplay work on the 2017 blockbuster A Taxi Driver, Uhm Yu Na previously made her mark as a director with the 2019 film My Punch-Drunk Boxer. Her involvement in Cartel suggests that the movie will blend deep historical research with a sophisticated, fast-paced narrative style that the audience has come to expect from her work.

A Dark Dive into Historical Corruption

The plot of Cartel is set against the volatile backdrop of South Korea’s military dictatorship during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film centers on a web of systemic corruption, political intrigue, and clandestine operations between military leaders and government officials. It tracks the collision between those wielding absolute power to maintain their status and the brave individuals working in the shadows to expose their malfeasance. With high-stakes deception at its core, the film is expected to be a visceral examination of morality and greed.

A Cast at the Peak of Their Craft

The involvement of these three lead actors ensures that Cartel will be one of the most talked-about films of the year.

  • Lee Sung Min: Continuing a career-defining hot streak, the actor recently secured a Best Supporting Actor win at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards for his turn in No Other Choice. He also impressed global audiences with his commanding performance in the Netflix series Teach You a Lesson.
  • Koo Kyo Hwan: Currently one of the most versatile stars in the industry, he is balancing an incredible volume of work. Beyond his recent roles in What If We, We Are All Trying Here, and the zombie flick Colony, he is managing a busy 2026 slate including Seeking the King, REAWAKENED MAN, Gardeners, and the directorial collaboration Your Country.
  • Yoon Kyung Ho: A fan favorite known for his range, Yoon Kyung Ho has received critical acclaim for The Trauma Code. His momentum continues with appearances in My Daughter is a Zombie, The Legend of Kitchen Soldier, and the ongoing series Agent Kim Reactivated. Beyond his dramatic chops, his charismatic presence on the variety show Pinggyego has solidified his status as a leading entertainment figure.

What to Expect

As these three stars juggle multiple high-profile commitments throughout 2026, their decision to unite for Cartel highlights the strength of the script. The film is poised to capture the intensity of a nation in transition, focusing on the harrowing battle for truth in an era where silence was often enforced by state-sanctioned violence. For fans of political thrillers that prioritize character depth and historical tension, Cartel is undoubtedly the film to watch.
