In a significant move, Netflix is set to add NASA+ livestreaming to its platform later this summer, enhancing the space agency’s event programming. This live content will be available to all subscribers without any extra charges, bringing the wonders of the universe directly to their devices and aiming to give wider access to NASA’s groundbreaking science and exploration efforts. Although an official launch date for this Netflix feature has not been announced yet, it appears that it will arrive soon.
Integrating NASA+ into Netflix’s extensive offerings will allow viewers to watch rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission updates, and live panoramic views from the International Space Station (ISS) — all in high-definition quality. It’s important to mention that NASA+ continues to be offered for free through the NASA app and website; the goal is to enhance viewership by making space exploration more accessible to a broader audience. Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, stated that the initiative aims to inspire new generations:
“Our Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience. Together, we’re committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration — inspiring new generations — right from the comfort of their couch or through their phones.“
NASA+ was initially unveiled in November 2023 as part of an expansion of the space agency’s digital media presence, coinciding with the redesign of the NASA app and website. The complimentary, on-demand streaming service offers various space-related video content, including live events, documentaries, and stunning high-definition views of the universe. Making this service available on Netflix will significantly increase its audience, potentially reaching over 700 million people worldwide, with more details expected as the launch date approaches.
To complement the new NASA+ offerings, Netflix also features a range of space-themed titles in its streaming library, allowing viewers to experience cosmological adventures from their homes. Notable films include First Man, which recounts Neil Armstrong’s lunar mission; “Ad Astra,” about an astronaut searching for his father in space; and Hidden Figures, showcasing the contributions of three brilliant mathematicians at NASA. Additionally, Zack Snyder’s two-part space opera, Rebel Moon, is available, including both R-rated director’s cuts.
Spaceman was released on Netflix in March of the previous year. Based on the 2017 novel “Spaceman of Bohemia” by Jaroslav Kalfař, the film features Adam Sandler as an astronaut on a solitary research mission, where he encounters a mysterious creature. The movie received a mixed reception, reflected in its 50% critic score and 65% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some viewers noted parallels between Spaceman and Andy Weir’s 2021 novel “Project Hail Mary,” which is also slated for a film adaptation, set to be released in March 2026.
