Renowned animation studio Laika is ready to unveil its latest stop-motion masterpiece following six arduous years in development. Known for pushing the boundaries of meticulous craftsmanship in acclaimed feature films such as Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, the Oregon-based studio has released the official preview for its upcoming epic fantasy feature, Wildwood. Distributed by Fathom Entertainment, the cinematic adaptation is slated to arrive in theaters nationwide this autumn.
Into the Enchanted Woods: Plot and Premise
Set against the backdrop of a reimagined Portland, Oregon, the story introduces audiences to a hidden world of enchantment nestled just beyond the city limits. Wildwood presents a classic fantasy narrative reminiscent of iconic magical tales, where ordinary young protagonists are unexpectedly thrust into an extraordinary realm.
The plot centers on two twelve-year-old companions, Prue (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and Curtis (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), who unexpectedly stumble into an unseen, magical wilderness where intelligent, talking fauna and humans co-exist. The central conflict erupts when Prue’s younger brother, Mac, is snatched away by a sinister flock of crows controlled by Alexandra, a formidable villain brought to life by Carey Mulligan.
When Curtis is also captured by the dark force, Alexandra attempts to manipulate him toward her secretive, malicious ends. The newly released trailer, accompanied by an evocative musical cover of the track “Wake Me Up,” offers a glimpse into Alexandra’s tragic history. Driven by grief over the loss of her child, her dark campaign stems from a quest for vengeance against the magical inhabitants of the forest.
Literary Origins and Creative Collaboration
The upcoming film draws its source material from the celebrated 2011 middle-grade fantasy novel of the same name. Written by Colin Meloy, famously known as the lead singer and songwriter for the indie rock band The Decemberists, the original book featured intricate, whimsical illustrations created by his wife, artist Carson Ellis. Bringing the production full circle, Colin Meloy has also written an original musical piece for the film adaptation.
A Star-Studded Cast and High-Caliber Crew
Helming the ambitious project is Travis Knight, who serves as both the chief executive officer and lead animator at Laika. He directs the feature from a screenplay written by Chris Butler. The creative duo previously joined forces on the acclaimed 2016 animated adventure Kubo and the Two Strings, as well as collaborating on the live-action project Masters of the Universe.
To bring the whimsical and perilous characters to life, Laika assembled an extraordinary ensemble of vocal talent. Alongside Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, and Carey Mulligan, the voice cast features prominent actors including Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits, Richard E. Grant, Len Cariou, Marc Evan Jackson, and Rob Delaney.
On the technical side, legendary cinematographer Caleb Deschanel managed the film’s camera work and framing, while Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli composed the original orchestral score.
Theatrical Debut and Distribution Strategy
Animation enthusiasts will be able to experience Wildwood on the big screen starting October 23, courtesy of Fathom Entertainment. Notably, this nationwide release marks a significant transition for the distribution company, representing one of its first major steps into traditional, full-scale theatrical distribution rather than its standard limited event screenings. Given Laika’s historic commitment to tactile art and stunning visual detail, this fantasy epic promises to deliver a captivating cinematic experience for audiences of all ages.
