ZEE5 has launched its latest crime drama, Janaawar: The Beast Within, which premiered today. Featuring Bhuvan Arora in the lead role, the web series is set in the fictional jungle town of Chhand, Chhattisgarh. What begins as a typical missing person’s case gradually evolves into a disturbing murder mystery. Directed by Shachindra Vats, the show brings together a strong ensemble cast, including Bhagwan Tiwari, Atul Kale, Vaibhav Yashvir, Eshika Dey, Vinod Suryavanshi, Deekshha Sonalkar Tham, and Badrul Islam.

Story

The story opens with Sub-Inspector Hemant Kumar (Bhuvan Arora), a lower-caste officer, receiving a complex case from his senior, Inspector Dayanand (Atul Kale). A headless corpse, stolen gold, and a missing man set the stage for what appears to be a straightforward investigation. However, Hemant soon finds himself juggling both his professional duties and personal struggles, especially with his wife Garima (Deekshha Sonalkar Tham), a pregnant.

When DSP Anirudh Pathak (Bhagwan Tiwari) assigns him the task of finding the killer, Hemant ventures deeper into the village’s dark secrets. As he unravels uncomfortable truths about the townspeople, he begins to wonder whether he is closing in on the murderer—or falling into a dangerous trap laid out by the real culprit.

Performances

Bhuvan Arora delivers a sincere performance but falls short in convincingly portraying a police officer. His dialogue delivery and screen presence could have been stronger for such an intense role. Atul Kale, despite a veteran reputation, delivers a rather average act. On the other hand, supporting actors like Vaibhav Yashvir, Eshika Dey, Vinod Suryavanshi, and Deekshha Sonalkar Tham hold their ground well in their respective roles.

The standout, however, is Badrul Islam. Even though his performance isn’t flawless, his character leaves a lasting impact. Without giving away spoilers, it is safe to say that he emerges as the surprise element of Janaawar.

Behind the scenes

Shachindra Vats attempts to craft a layered crime thriller but struggles with pacing and cohesion. While the premise is engaging, the screenplay by Sonalii Gupta Srivastava and Shreyas Lowlekar fails to maintain suspense. The slow narrative makes it difficult for viewers to stay invested in the story, turning what could have been a gripping watch into a test of patience.

On the positive side, Rahul Nayak’s cinematography beautifully captures the eerie atmosphere of Chhand, enhancing the show’s dark tone. Shachindra Vats also takes charge of the editing, which is competent yet could have benefited from sharper cuts to maintain intensity.

Final Verdict

Janaawar: The Beast Within is an ambitious crime drama that unfortunately does not fully hit the mark. While it explores thought-provoking themes of caste, power dynamics, and the hidden layers of human nature, the execution is inconsistent. The show feels dragged due to its weak screenplay and average performances, though it does provoke reflection on the “beast” within society and ourselves.

If you enjoy crime dramas with a social undertone, Janaawar may still hold some value. However, viewers expecting a fast-paced thriller might be left underwhelmed.
