In an industry celebrated for creative storytelling and cinematic excellence, Inspection Bungalow, stands out for daring to attempt something rarely done in Malayalam entertainment — a horror-comedy series. Directed by Saiju SS and featuring Shabareesh Varma alongside Aadhya Prasad, this seven-episode web series lands on Zee5 OTT platform as the first-ever Malayalam title in this genre. While the ambition is commendable, the final product doesn’t fully capture the magic one might expect from such an intriguing premise.

Story

The plot follows SI Vishnu (Shabareesh Varma), an easily frightened police officer who finds himself stationed in a remote village. His worst fears come true when the local MLA decides to relocate the police station to the area’s most notorious location — the abandoned and allegedly haunted Inspection Bungalow.

On their very first night inside, unsettling occurrences begin to unfold. Driven by fear, Vishnu calls for a priest to cleanse the building. But when the spectral presence manifests as Mythili (Aadhya Prasad), a spirited paranormal researcher, the story pivots from lighthearted horror into a revenge drama steeped in village secrets and past wrongs.

Though the mystery element adds some intrigue, the narrative follows a rather predictable path. Scares never truly frighten, and the humor often feels formulaic, making the overall tone inconsistent.

Performances

Shabareesh Varma delivers an adequate portrayal of the timid Vishnu, offering mild charm in comedic moments but failing to deliver emotional depth when required. Aadhya Prasad’s Mythili is the more engaging character, though her exaggerated performance may polarize viewers.

Among the supporting cast, Saju Sreedhar and Senthil Krishna fare reasonably well, while Jayan Cherthala provides a competent supporting turn. The rest of the ensemble — including Veena Nair, Sreejith Ravi, Balaji Sarma, and Manohari Joy — contribute solidly but without standout moments.

Behind the Scenes

Technically, Inspection Bungalow is a mixed success. The cinematography captures the eerie rural atmosphere decently, but special effects and action choreography lack refinement. Editing ensures a brisk pace thanks to the short, 20-minute episodes, yet the background score fails to heighten suspense or humor.

Production design is functional but forgettable, and dialogue writing struggles to produce genuinely witty moments. The choice of filming locations does add authenticity, though overall polish is missing.

Final Verdict

Inspection Bungalow earns credit for stepping into uncharted territory within Malayalam OTT content, but its safe execution prevents it from being memorable. While not a complete misfire, it’s far from a genre-defining success.

For viewers seeking light, short-form entertainment with a mix of mild thrills and simple storytelling, it’s worth a single watch. However, for audiences accustomed to the narrative depth of Malayalam cinema, it may feel like a step back. With sharper writing, improved technical finesse, and bolder creative risks, future projects in this genre could truly shine.

Rating: ⭐⭐☆ (2.5/5) – An interesting attempt that entertains in parts but struggles to leave a lasting impression.
