A Golden Milestone: HKIFF Celebrates 50 Years of Cinema
Next month, the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will celebrate its golden anniversary with a 12-day celebration of global cinema. Running from April 1 to 12, the landmark 50th edition brings together 215 films from 71 countries and territories, spotlighting visionary storytelling and cultural diversity. The festival opens with Anthony Chen’s We Are All Strangers and closes with Philip Yung’s Cyclone, two Asia premieres by acclaimed regional filmmakers.
Opening and Closing with Powerhouse Films
The festivities launch at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre with a gala screening of We Are All Strangers, the final chapter in Singaporean director Anthony Chen’s “Growing Up” trilogy. Starring Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler, the film explores complex themes of family, identity, and connection beyond biology. After earning acclaim at the Berlin International Film Festival, it now takes center stage at HKIFF.
On April 12, the festival draws to a close with Philip Yung’s Cyclone, a thought-provoking drama that premiered at Rotterdam earlier this year. Featuring Liu Yuqiao, Edwynn Li, and Jenny Suen, the film delves into transgender identity and the realities of social exclusion, reflecting contemporary dialogues in Asian cinema.
Jia Zhangke in Focus, Global Talent in Attendance
This year’s Filmmaker in Focus is acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke, honored with a curated retrospective and live appearances. Festival ambassadors Gingle Wang and Metawin Opasiamkajorn join Angela Yuen and Tony Wu as Asian Visionary Ambassadors, adding fresh energy to the celebrations.
A star-studded guest list includes Juliette Binoche, Chen Kaige, Ann Hui, Tsai Ming-liang, and Ildikó Enyedi, among others, promising dynamic conversations and masterclasses.
Special Events and Musical Highlights
To honor its 50th anniversary, HKIFF presents In the Mood for Love – In Concert, a live orchestral performance by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, reimagining Wong Kar-wai’s timeless score.
Also featured is the free exhibition “50 and Beyond: The Hong Kong International Film Festival Golden Jubilee Exhibition” at Hong Kong City Hall, showcasing rare archival materials, behind-the-scenes photos, and reflections from decades of cinematic history.
