The global appetite for regal storytelling shows no signs of waning. Following the massive success of historical dramas centered on the world’s most famous monarchies, a new high-end production is set to chronicle the serendipitous and deeply romantic tale of Sweden’s reigning queen. Titled Queen Silvia, this ambitious series has officially begun filming, promising a lush, cinematic look at a love story that bridged the gap between a commoner’s life in Germany and the royal court of Stockholm.
A Chance Meeting That Changed History
The narrative foundation of Queen Silvia is rooted in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. It was during this international sporting event that Silvia Sommerlath, a talented German-Brazilian interpreter, first crossed paths with the then-Crown Prince of Sweden, Carl Gustaf. At the time, the young prince was known for a somewhat playboy lifestyle, but his encounter with Sommerlath proved to be a turning point.
Their relationship is perhaps most famously immortalized through the music of the Swedish pop phenomenon ABBA. The group’s legendary hit, “Dancing Queen,” is forever linked to the couple; it was performed during a televised gala the night before their 1976 wedding, marking a cultural milestone that combined pop royalty with traditional monarchy.
A Star-Studded Cast and Cross-Border Production
Taking on the mantle of the titular lead is German talent Alicia von Rittberg, known for her work in Call My Agent! Berlin. She will portray Silvia’s journey from a professional linguist to the heart of the Swedish monarchy. Opposite her, Swedish actor Edvin Endre, who gained international recognition in the hit series Vikings, will step into the shoes of the young, charismatic Carl Gustaf.
Queen Silvia is being positioned as a European counterpart to The Crown, focusing on the intersection of personal headlines and monumental real-world events. The production is a collaborative effort between Germany’s Pyjama Pictures and Sweden’s Unlimited Stories. Under the directorial vision of Miguel Alexandre, who also co-wrote the script with Lisa Hofer and Pauline Wolff, the series will navigate locations ranging from the bustling streets of Munich to the serene French Riviera and the historic palaces of Stockholm.
Bringing Modern Royalty to the Small Screen
Industry powerhouse Beta Film is managing international sales, a move announced just as the television industry gathers in Lille for the prestigious Series Mania event. Prime Video has already secured the rights for the Nordics and German-speaking territories (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), while German audiences will also be able to view the show on the free-to-air channel SAT.1.
According to the production team, the series aims to offer more than just a surface-level biography. Showrunner Carsten Kelber describes it as one of the most significant love stories of the modern era, highlighting not just the bond between two individuals, but the cultural bridge built between Germany and Sweden.
As Beta Film continues to expand its “royal” portfolio—which already includes the successful Dutch series Máxima and the upcoming The Other Royals – A Máxima Story and Ludwig—the Queen Silvia project stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with the private lives of those behind the palace gates. With meticulous research and a focus on “modern and magical” storytelling, this series is poised to become a must-watch for drama enthusiasts worldwide.
