Netflix’s latest investigative feature, Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, directed by Oscar‑nominee Rory Kennedy, continues the filmmaker’s scrutiny of the aerospace giant. Building on her 2022 work DOWNFALL: The Case Against Boeing, the new documentary zeroes in on the individuals who warned of deteriorating safety standards and the tragic consequences that followed when those warnings were ignored.

Rory Kennedy’s Continued Investigation

Kennedy’s approach remains methodical and empathetic. She weaves together archival footage, expert commentary, and first‑hand interviews to construct a chronological narrative that highlights systemic lapses within Boeing’s quality‑control processes. By revisiting the 2018 crashes of the 737 MAX aircraft and linking them to present‑day whistleblower accounts, the film underscores a pattern of negligence that extends far beyond isolated incidents.

The Whistleblower Story – John Barnett

At the heart of Freefall lies the sobering case of John Barnett, a former Boeing quality manager whose relentless documentation of safety deficiencies culminated in his suicide in 2024, shortly after he submitted deposition materials for his own whistleblower lawsuit. Barnett’s death ignited a wave of speculation, yet the documentary deliberately sidesteps conspiracy theories, choosing instead to illuminate his professional journey. Interviews with Barnett himself, recorded before his passing, reveal a man committed to upholding integrity, repeatedly encountering resistance when he reported irregularities to senior management.

Families Seeking Justice

The film also amplifies the voices of families affected by the 737 MAX tragedies. Naoise Ryan, widow of Mick Ryan—one of the Ethiopian Airlines crash victims—joins other relatives in advocating for accountability. Their collective effort, portrayed through candid conversations and shared activism, demonstrates how personal loss can fuel a broader demand for corporate reform. The documentary shows these families working alongside whistleblowers, forming an unlikely alliance aimed at compelling Boeing to confront its safety culture.

Emotional Impact and Narrative Style

Kennedy does not shy away from the human cost of corporate indifference. Scenes of quality managers breaking down as they recount being told to “mind their business” convey the emotional strain faced by those who attempted to raise alarms. The film’s pacing allows viewers to absorb the gravity of each testimony, while the accompanying score subtly underscores moments of tension and reflection. The result is a compelling blend of factual reporting and emotive storytelling that resonates with a general audience.

Companion Piece to The Showstoppers

Freefall functions effectively alongside the 2024 investigative report The Showstoppers: Boeing’s No Fly Zone by ABC News 4 in South Carolina. While The Showstoppers focused on the immediate fallout of Barnett’s death and featured journalist Anne Emerson’s fieldwork, Freefall expands the timeline, offering updates on pending legal cases and introducing additional voices such as Roy Irvin and Santiago Paredes—a Spirit AeroSystems engineer who earned the nickname “showstopper” for halting production over safety concerns. Together, these works provide a comprehensive portrait of the ongoing struggle for transparency within the aviation supply chain.

Where to Watch

Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing is now streaming exclusively on Netflix. Subscribers can access the documentary directly through the platform’s search function or via the “Documentaries” category.
