A New Chapter Begins

After a significant hiatus following their 2022 promotions for the single “ZOMBIE,” the members of EVERGLOW have embarked on a new journey. All six original members departed from YH Entertainment (formerly Yuehua Entertainment), with four—E:U, Sihyeon, Onda, and Aisha—choosing to continue the group’s legacy under the banner of CHXXTA Company. This week marks their pivotal return, releasing their first song as a quartet, aptly titled “CODE.”

Sound Analysis: A Shift in Programming

“CODE” immediately signals a departure from EVERGLOW’s signature retro-inspired dance anthems, opting instead to tap into more contemporary musical trends. The intention behind this release is clearly one of reinvention. However, within the track’s DNA, particularly its punchy and impactful chorus, there seems to be a quiet acknowledgment of what made their past hits like “PIRATE” so effective. This central section of the song is undeniably its strongest asset, bursting with a bold, rushing energy that reminds listeners of the group’s formidable potential.

The primary critique of “CODE” lies in its journey to that powerful climax. The song is front-loaded with a persistent and somewhat unexciting trap beat that feels dated. This lackluster build-up creates a hurdle for the listener, making it challenging to reach the track’s true selling point. Furthermore, the group’s typically fierce and character-driven vocal delivery feels restrained here, lacking the added punch that defined their previous title tracks.

Visuals and Performance

The music video for “CODE” employs a stark, industrial-esque backdrop, allowing the members’ visuals to take center stage. A standout moment features a clever transition where a digital code breakdown shatters their environment, creating an atmospheric void. A few other smooth, tech-inspired edits throughout the video are visually striking. Beyond these elements, the production remains minimalist.

The accompanying choreography is competently executed but leaves room for greater intensity. Sharper, more powerful movements would have complemented the music’s aggressive moments more effectively, particularly during the outro. A bolder performance could have elevated the routine and provided a more commanding finish.

Final Verdict

“CODE” serves as a statement of renewal for EVERGLOW, boldly stepping into a new era with a changed lineup and sound. While the chorus powerfully echoes the group’s celebrated past, the song’s dated elements and restrained delivery prevent it from fully capitalizing on its own potential. It is a promising, albeit imperfect, first step for the quartet as they work to redefine their identity for today’s listeners.
