The anime blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has stormed into theaters with an explosive debut, earning an estimated $70 million in North America and cementing itself as the biggest anime film opening in U.S. box office history. According to Comscore data, the film not only claimed the No. 1 spot for the weekend but also surpassed The Conjuring: Last Rites, ushering in what looks to be a strong rebound for September cinema.

The Sony-owned Crunchyroll release shattered long-standing records, toppling the 1999 hit Pokémon: The First Movie, which opened with $31 million. Featuring breathtaking animation from Ufotable, Infinity Castle marks the beginning of a three-part finale to the globally celebrated Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba saga.

Global Box Office Success

The film’s impact has not been limited to North America. Internationally, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has also delivered a phenomenal performance, raking in more than $132 million across 49 international markets. With a combined worldwide gross now reaching approximately $178 million, this installment has proven the Demon Slayer brand’s unmatched global appeal.

Industry experts have highlighted the significance of this achievement. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told the Associated Press that this level of success was anything but predictable. “Just a few weeks ago, few would have confidently forecast that a Japanese anime feature would surpass $70 million in its opening weekend,” he emphasized, noting how the film’s performance demonstrates the unpredictability—and excitement—of today’s theatrical marketplace.

Storytelling That Resonates Globally

The film continues the emotional journey of Tanjiro Kamado, a compassionate swordsman, and his sister Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon. Their struggle to hold on to their humanity while battling overwhelming threats has clearly struck a chord with audiences worldwide. This unique blend of heart, action, and stunning visuals seems to be one of the key reasons for its universal appeal.

Other Weekend Box Office Highlights

While Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle dominated, other titles also made notable debuts and contributions to the weekend’s earnings:

  • The Conjuring: Last Rites secured second place, adding $26 million domestically, bringing its North American total to $131 million.
  • Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale opened in third place with $18.1 million.
  • The Long Walk (Lionsgate) brought in $11.5 million.
  • Toy Story (30th Anniversary) returned with $3.5 million.
  • Weapons earned $2.75 million.
  • Hamilton (Disney) drew $2.2 million.
  • Freakier Friday collected $2.1 million.
  • Spinal Tap II: The End Continues earned $1.6 million.
  • The Sound of Music (60th Anniversary) pulled in $1.4 million.

A Turning Point for the Box Office

After a sluggish August, the impressive numbers posted by Demon Slayer and The Conjuring: Last Rites signal a potential box office comeback. Analysts believe this momentum could continue with highly anticipated upcoming releases such as Jordan Peele’s HIM and Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another.

As Dergarabedian noted, “Two months of underperforming numbers can be completely reversed in a matter of weekends.” September is shaping up to be an unexpectedly strong post-summer season for theaters, offering renewed optimism for both audiences and the industry at large.

With its record-breaking start, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has not only given anime a historic win but has also injected much-needed energy into the global box office.
