Released worldwide on January 16, 2026, Can This Love Be Translated? is the latest romantic comedy from the renowned Hong Sisters, directed by Yoo Young-eun. Produced by Imaginus and Triii Studio, the series has quickly become one of the year’s most talked-about K-dramas. With its blend of humor, emotional depth, and cultural nuance, it’s not just a love story—it’s a reflection on how feelings can get lost or found between languages.

Story

Set against a backdrop of international filming locations, the story follows Cha Mu-hee, a top Korean actress, and Hiro Kurosawa, a charming Japanese co-star. Their on-screen connection depends on Joo Ho-jin, a reserved Korean interpreter who bridges the language gap through an earpiece. But when Hiro confesses his wish to see more of Mu-hee, Ho-jin hesitates—because the emotions he’s translating may be his own.

A flashback to a year earlier reveals their first meeting in Tokyo, when Mu-hee, then relatively unknown, seeks answers from a ramen shop owner about her failed relationship. Ho-jin, multilingual and calm under pressure, becomes unexpectedly involved in her confrontation—and even rescues a child during a medical emergency. What begins as a passing encounter evolves into a day spent together, hinting at a connection neither fully understands until fate brings them back into each other’s lives.

Performances

Kim Seon-ho delivers a nuanced portrayal of Ho-jin, embodying quiet restraint and emotional complexity. Go Youn-jung’s Mu-hee is vibrant, vulnerable, and entirely relatable, making their dynamic both tender and compelling. Sota Fukushi’s Hiro Kurosawa is a standout—his openness and charm add warmth to the series, leaving audiences hoping to see him in more multilingual roles.

Behind the Scenes

The cinematography and editing deserve special mention, particularly in Mu-hee’s hallucination sequences, which immerse viewers in her emotional turmoil. The production’s attention to visual detail, coupled with a fitting soundtrack and memorable OSTs, enhances the emotional resonance. Netflix’s decision to release all 12 episodes at once fuels binge-worthy appeal, though the pacing sometimes falters due to extended emotional beats that slow narrative momentum.

Final Verdict

Can This Love Be Translated? is a heartfelt, cross-cultural rom-com that explores the challenges of communication—both linguistic and emotional. While the series occasionally tests patience with its drawn-out moments, its emotional highs, strong performances, and thematic depth make it a worthwhile watch for fans of romance with a touch of drama. If you enjoy slow-burn love stories layered with cultural nuance, this K-drama should be on your watchlist.
