The highly-anticipated fourth season of Bridgerton has arrived, bringing viewers back into the opulent world of romance and intrigue. This season shifts focus to Benedict Bridgerton, portrayed by Luke Thompson, as he embarks on an enchanting journey to find love with new character Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). With the first four episodes of Part 1 now available on Netflix, fans are in for a delightful ride filled with magic and emotion.

Story

In Bridgerton Season 4, the narrative centers on the charming second son, Benedict, who has delayed his entry into the marriage market longer than expected. At a masquerade ball hosted by his mother, he encounters a mysterious Lady in Silver, who disappears without revealing her identity. Adapted from Julia Quinn’s beloved novels, this season explores the theme of love at first sight, unfolding like a modern Cinderella tale where the protagonists face several hurdles before achieving their happy ending. While the plot may occasionally feel overcrowded, the undeniable chemistry between Benedict and Sophie keeps the story engaging and captivating.

This season not only highlights Benedict’s journey but also sheds light on the lives of the ton, who have mostly remained in the background in previous installments. Mirroring the dynamics seen in Downton Abbey and Gosford Park, the series artfully balances the lives of the nobility with those of their servants. As it turns out, the enchanting Lady in Silver is none other than Sophie Baek, a maid serving Araminta Gun’s household. Their shared experiences of loneliness create a poignant backdrop, illustrating how they have long awaited one another. Meanwhile, the meddlesome nature of Benedict’s family, particularly his mother Violet (Ruth Gemmell) and sister Eloise (Claudia Jessie), adds a delightful layer of complexity to the story.

Performances

Luke Thompson shines in his role as Benedict, displaying both charm and vulnerability as he navigates his feelings for Sophie, who captivates him while initially being someone he believes she isn’t. Yerin Ha, in her role as Sophie, brings a refreshing energy to the Bridgerton universe, effortlessly connecting with the rest of the Bridgerton family. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, making their romantic journey all the more enchanting. Supporting characters, including Katie Leung, Michelle Mao, and Isabelle Wei, who portray Sophie’s employers, contribute significantly to the unfolding intrigue.

Behind the Scenes

Under the guidance of showrunner Jess Brownell, Bridgerton Season 4 aims to incorporate the entire ensemble cast, but at times this results in a diluted focus on the Bridgerton family. Director Tom Verica’s premiere episode captures the essence of the famed masquerade ball beautifully, presenting the magical first encounter between Benedict and Sophie with an ethereal touch. However, as Lady Whistledown is now unmasked, the narrative risks becoming bloated, with Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) relegated to a gossiping bystander rather than an influential character as in the books. The introduction of servant storylines adds depth but may divert attention from the main plot.

Visually, this season largely meets the lush standards set by previous installments. The cinematography immerses viewers in candlelit ballrooms, sweeping gardens, and the contrasting environments of the ton’s polished spaces juxtaposed with Benedict’s lively family home. These rougher, more personalized settings enhance the emotional connection of the romance, grounding the characters in a relatable reality.

Final Verdict

Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 delivers an enchanting mix of escapism and romance, with strong performances from Thompson and Ha leading the charge. While it occasionally lacks the intimate family scenes that characterized earlier seasons, the show still successfully captivates with its vibrant storytelling and stunning visuals. As fans eagerly await the conclusion of Season 4 on February 26, the first four episodes are now streaming on Netflix, promising a delightful viewing experience.
