An Incredible True Story Comes to OTT

Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ production house, Purple Pebble Pictures, is bringing an extraordinary real-life story to streaming audiences this November. Born Hungry is a deeply moving documentary chronicling the remarkable life of Sash Simpson — an orphan from India who overcame unimaginable odds to become one of Canada’s most acclaimed chefs.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Barry Avrich, the documentary traces Simpson’s journey from the streets of Chennai to the high-end kitchens of Toronto, capturing a life shaped by resilience, ambition, and a search for identity.

The film will premiere exclusively on JioHotstar on November 28, 2024, following a successful run at various international film festivals, including its world debut at the Palm Springs International Film Festival 2024.

From the Streets of Chennai to Culinary Stardom

Sash Simpson’s early years were marked by uncertainty and hardship. At just five years old, he was found wandering in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Three years later, he was adopted by Canadian philanthropists Sandra and Lloyd Simpson — founders of the Families for Children orphanage.

Growing up in Canada alongside 31 adopted siblings in Montreal and Toronto, Sash discovered his passion for cooking at the age of 14. His culinary journey took him from kitchen apprentice to celebrated chef and eventually the proud owner of his own restaurant in Toronto.

A Personal Quest for Answers

While Simpson built a successful career, questions about his origins never left him. In the Born Hungry trailer, he likens his life to “a puzzle with missing pieces” — pieces he felt compelled to reclaim. The documentary captures his emotional return to India, as he searches for the truth about his childhood: Was he abandoned, or did he run away?

A Story of Hope, Home, and Determination

Praised for its heartfelt storytelling, Born Hungry is not only a celebration of personal triumph but also a contemplation of identity and belonging. On Instagram, the film’s trailer was introduced with the words: “A story of hunger, hope, and home. From the streets of India to the kitchens of Canada.”

With Priyanka Chopra’s backing, Born Hungry is set to inspire global audiences when it debuts on JioHotstar. Whether you’re drawn to stories of grit, adoption, food, or personal discovery, this documentary promises to leave a lasting impact.
