Apple TV is set to take viewers deeper into the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters universe with a brand-new prequel series centered on the early years of Colonel Lee Shaw, portrayed once again by Wyatt Russell. The upcoming show, currently untitled and unofficially referred to as the “Young Lee Shaw” prequel, will expand Legendary’s Monsterverse, delivering an exciting mix of character-driven drama and Titan-sized spectacle.

With the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters launching in just over two months, Apple TV’s latest announcement signals a bold expansion of the Monsterverse for streaming audiences. Emmy-nominated writer and producer Joby Harold, known for his work on high-profile genre projects, will serve as showrunner. Harold will also oversee the broader Monsterverse storytelling for Apple TV, ensuring fans can expect a seamless connection between this prequel and the existing franchise.

Set in 1984, the series follows a younger Lee Shaw during a covert mission deep behind enemy lines. Tasked with preventing the Soviet Union from unleashing a devastating new Titan capable of obliterating the United States and altering the course of the Cold War, Shaw faces a high-stakes blend of espionage and monster chaos. The storyline promises a thrilling mix of political tension, global danger, and the awe-inspiring scale fans have come to expect from the Monsterverse.

Morgan Wandell, Apple TV’s head of international content development, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “Audiences worldwide have embraced Monarch: Legacy of Monsters since its debut, and we’re eager to deliver the electrifying new stories Joby and the creative team have been crafting. This spinoff will bring fans even closer to their favorite Titans while introducing unforgettable new characters.”

Joby Harold echoed the excitement, stating that working within such an iconic cinematic universe is a privilege. He praised Apple and Legendary for their partnership and commitment to honoring the legacy of these legendary creatures. Jason Clodfelter, president and managing director at Legendary Television, emphasized Harold’s deep understanding of the Monsterverse and announced a broader collaboration with Safehouse Pictures.

The prequel is executive produced by Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, alongside Wyatt Russell, Chris Black, Kyle Bradstreet, Alex Boden, Max Borenstein, and Andy Goddard. Producers include Kei Banno, Brian Rogers, and Kenji Okuhira, with Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive producing on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the rights holder for Godzilla. Toho’s long-standing relationship with Legendary made the licensing of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters a natural continuation of their partnership.

With Cold War intrigue, colossal Titans, and a fan-favorite lead, Apple TV’s untitled Monarch: Legacy of Monsters prequel is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated streaming events in the Monsterverse’s next chapter.
