More than a year after his military enlistment in 2022, JIN of BTS made a much-anticipated solo return with his debut mini-album HAPPY. Featuring six tracks, including pre-release single I’ll Be There and the vibrant title track Running Wild, the project showcases JIN’s versatility, emotional depth, and charisma. In this review, we break down each song and share why HAPPY stands out as one of the year’s most impressive K-pop releases.

1. Running Wild (Title Track)

The Running Wild music video begins with a meteor shower scene, setting a cinematic tone. While chaos unfolds around him, JIN remains composed, embarking on a road trip with his loyal dog. Along the way, he witnesses heartwarming moments, such as a family reunion, reflecting the song’s core themes of hope and love. The climax, featuring JIN skillfully dodging falling meteors in an action-style sequence, adds unexpected exhilaration and visual flair.

2. I’ll Be There (Pre-Release Track)

I’ll Be There delivers an uplifting message to those feeling alone, amplified by JIN’s warm yet powerful vocals. The pop-rock arrangement leans heavily on percussion, creating a vibrant energy that matches the track’s optimistic tone. The slight huskiness in JIN’s voice adds a unique character, distinguishing it from his BTS performances. A touch more guitar in the final chorus could have elevated the sound further, but overall, it’s a standout track.

3. Another Level

With its intense rock instrumentation and cinematic atmosphere, Another Level feels tailor-made for an “epic music” playlist. JIN’s commanding delivery matches the song’s grand scale, while subtle autotune effects add a modern polish that enhances its appeal.

4. Falling (네게닿을때까지)

This track pairs clean, modern rock with JIN’s emotive vocals, particularly shining in the chorus. A Japanese version, featuring TAKA, offers an even more impactful performance, yet the Korean version remains equally compelling.

5. Heart on the Window (ft. WENDY of Red Velvet)

Combining acoustic elements with pop percussion, Heart on the Window brings JIN and WENDY together in beautiful harmony. Both artists hold their ground vocally, creating a balanced duet that feels tender yet uplifting. The only drawback is its brevity—it leaves listeners wanting more.

6. I Will Come To You (그리움에)

Closing the album is a heartfelt ballad dedicated to fans, written by JIN himself. With only piano accompaniment, his vocals take center stage, delivering warmth and sincerity. The lyrics feel like a personal message of gratitude, making it an emotional finale.

Verdict:
HAPPY is a well-rounded, emotionally rich mini-album that cements JIN’s place as a solo artist to watch. From high-energy rock tracks to tender ballads, it’s a highly recommended listen for both BTS fans and casual K-pop listeners.
