In a thrilling announcement that has caught fans off guard, Tom Cruise has released the first teaser for his eagerly-anticipated film Digger. This project represents a significant divergence from the adrenaline-fueled action roles for which he is widely recognized. Directed by the acclaimed Alejandro González Iñárritu, known for his Oscar-winning work on The Revenant and Birdman, this film promises to be an exciting venture.

On Thursday, Cruise shared a short preview along with the film’s title, with Warner Bros. describing Digger as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.” The initial look indicates a quirky, surreal tone distinctly different from the action-packed Mission: Impossible series.

The teaser offers a tantalizing glimpse into the film’s world, filled with bizarre and surreal visuals. In a particularly odd sequence, Cruise is depicted dancing with a shovel, kneeling before it, and later standing atop a fence with an ocean-view boardwalk in the background. His character, sporting a haphazard look of cowboy boots and athletic shorts, seems peculiarly obsessed with the shovel, hinting at an eccentric personality. This whimsical atmosphere is enhanced by the track “O Green World” by Gorillaz, further emphasizing the teaser’s unconventional vibe.

Tom Cruise took to X to share his excitement, exclaiming, “Let’s f**ing go!” alongside the teaser clip.

In Digger, Cruise takes on the role of Digger Rockwell, who is characterized as “the most powerful man in the world.” Warner Bros. reveals that his character embarks on a frantic mission to persuade humanity of his role as its savior, even as the calamity he has instigated looms large, threatening to bring about total devastation.

This film marks Cruise’s first foray into a full-fledged comedic role since 2010’s Knight and Day, making it a noteworthy shift in his diverse filmography. The impressive cast includes talents such as Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy, adding layers of intrigue to this ambitious endeavor.

Key Details at a Glance:

  • Title: Digger
  • Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Release Date: October 2, 2026
  • Studio: Warner Bros.

With its enigmatic teaser, accomplished director, and Tom Cruise embracing an unfamiliar genre, Digger is already generating buzz as one of the most anticipated films of the upcoming years.
