Amazon MGM Studios has announced the release of Sarah’s Oil, an inspiring new historical drama set to premiere on November 7, 2025. The highly anticipated film brings to life one of the most extraordinary yet overlooked stories of early 20th-century America—the journey of Sarah Rector, a young African American girl who shocked the nation by becoming one of the first Black female millionaires at only eleven years old.

A Remarkable True Story

Born in Oklahoma’s Indian Territory in 1902, Sarah Rector grew up during an era defined by segregation, limited opportunities, and generational hardship. The film, starring newcomer Naya Desir-Johnson as young Sarah, follows her against this backdrop of adversity. Despite the skepticism of neighbors and even her own community, Sarah remains convinced that the seemingly barren land she inherited holds oil—and her determination ultimately proves transformative.

When oil is discovered on her property, Sarah’s life takes a dramatic turn. But rather than being a simple rags-to-riches tale, Sarah’s Oil explores the challenges that followed her sudden wealth. As powerful oil barons and opportunists sought to seize control of her fortune, Sarah had to fight not only for her financial independence but also for her dignity and future. Supported by her family, loyal friends, and a group of Texas wildcatters, Sarah learns to stand firm in a world determined to exploit her.

Cast and Creative Team

Directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh, the film blends period-accurate detail with heartfelt storytelling. In addition to Naya Desir-Johnson’s breakout role, the cast features Zachary Levi, Sonequa Martin-Green, Garret Dillahunt, Mel Rodriguez, and Bridget Regan, each contributing to the film’s layered portrayal of the people surrounding Sarah’s journey.

Behind the camera, the project is steered by producers John Shepherd, Kevin Downes, Daryl Lefever, and brothers Andrew and Jon Erwin, with NFL quarterback Russell Wilson and singer Ciara serving as executive producers—adding both star power and cultural significance to the production.

A Story That Resonates Today

Rated PG for thematic material, mild violence, racial language, and brief mature elements, the movie does not shy away from the harsh realities Sarah endured. Yet it ultimately delivers an uplifting and empowering narrative about resilience, courage, and vision in the face of systemic injustice.

By revisiting Sarah Rector’s incredible life, Sarah’s Oil ensures she is remembered not only as a child millionaire but also as a pioneering symbol of strength, perseverance, and possibility. In highlighting her legacy, the film underscores that history is filled with hidden trailblazers whose stories remain as relevant and inspiring today as they were a century ago.
