Special Ops 2 marks the third season of the espionage thriller series Special Ops. The inaugural season centered on Senior RAW officer Himmat Singh, portrayed by Kay Kay Menon, as he pursued the criminal mastermind Ikhlaq Khan—who was accountable for numerous attacks across India—while also dealing with an internal audit concerning unusually high miscellaneous expenses. Meanwhile, Special Ops 1.5 delved into Himmat’s backstory, uncovering the journey that shaped him into the adept RAW officer he is today.

Directed by Shivam Nair, Special Ops 2 features a cast that includes Karan Tacker, Vinay Pathak, Muzammil Ibrahim, Saiyami Kher, Gautami Kapoor, and Meher Vij. Notable actor Prakash Raj joins the ensemble in a new role, while Tahir Raj Bhasin will portray the antagonist. The web series will also showcase the talents of Dilip Tahil, Parmeet Sethi, Kali Prasad Mukherjee, Arif Zakaria, Kamakshi Bhat, Shikha Talsania, and Vikkas Manaktala.

This hotstar specials series is now streaming on JioHotstar.

Story

The series begins with the kidnapping of a prominent scientist with access to crucial government sectors — sectors that, if exploited, could jeopardize the nation’s stability. However, the antagonist, skillfully portrayed by Tahir Raj Bhasin, is not motivated by conventional goals like destruction or terrorism. His primary aim is straightforward: wealth. He targets India’s UPI control system, orchestrating a grand cyber heist in cahoots with agents from China and the US. Rather than aiming to dismantle India physically, his method involves a digital attack — possibly an even more alarming threat in today’s age. Himmat (Kay Kay Menon) and his team must track down the villain, decipher his strategy, and avert a cyber-attack that could incapacitate the nation’s digital infrastructure. The pursuit proves challenging, as the antagonist consistently remains one step ahead.

Performances

Kay Kay Menon excels as Himmat Singh, delivering a commanding performance that serves as the series’ foundation. Supporting actors Karan Tacker, Saiyami Kher, and Muzammil Ibrahim remain true to their roles and shine in the action sequences.

Revathi Pillai is charming as Himmat’s daughter Pari, while Vinay Pathak is delightful to watch after all these years. Prakash Raj and Dalip Tahil are consistently reliable in their performances. Tahir Raj Bhasin nails the role of a despicable villain, which is a compliment, and Arif Zakaria as Dr. Bhargav adds depth to the season with his outstanding performance. Every actor contributes significantly to the narrative, making Special Ops 2 a notable addition to the acclaimed series.

Behind the scenes

From a technical perspective, Special Ops 2 is quite impressive. The suspenseful background score heightens the drama, while the cinematography effectively captures the tones suitable for a mystery-filled espionage story. Although some slow pan shots feel unnecessarily prolonged, especially since the series spans nearly six hours, the overall pacing remains effective. There are moments where the editing could have been tighter in predictable scenes, but the production and art design maintain a sense of realism and believability. Shivam Nair and Neeraj Pandey have once again crafted a world that is both realistic and captivating—stylish yet grounded, complex yet approachable.

Additionally, the background score is excessively prominent and sometimes intrusive, attempting to create tension where it is lacking. The subplot involving Subramanyam, Himmat’s former mentor, wanders aimlessly and feels disconnected from the main storyline. It unnecessarily stretches the runtime, leading to a sense that a more concise, five-episode format would have better served the narrative.

Final Verdict

Special Ops 2 is highly recommended for Kay Kay Menon’s powerful and immersive performance as Himmat, and creator-director Neeraj Pandey’s masterful espionage storytelling. The series though with some loose ends effectively blends patriotism and action with authentic human emotions, offering a compelling insight into the world of intelligence. You can try it if you are an espionage buff!
