A month after its theatrical debut, the movie has moved to an OTT service, where it now carries an IMDb score of 7.5.

What starts out as a breezy, light‑hearted escapade between an aged gentleman and a small‑time crook soon morphs into a deeper, more intricate journey across the picturesque landscapes of Tamil Nadu. The simple road‑trip premise peels back layers of nuance, challenging the audience’s sense of right and wrong. Filled with heartfelt moments and surprising twists, the story holds viewers captive, prompting them to contemplate the true meanings of justice and redemption.

Plot Synopsis

The film in focus is Maareesan, a 2025 Tamil thriller helmed by Sudheesh Sankar and presently streaming on Netflix. The cast is led by Fahadh Faasil as Dhayalan, a slick ex‑convict, and Vadivelu as Velayudham, an Alzheimer’s‑stricken senior with a concealed past. Initially, Dhayalan intends to exploit Velayudham’s frailty for personal profit. Yet, as the two travel together, Dhayalan discovers Velayudham’s hidden agenda: avenging his late wife by hunting down those responsible for her death. This revelation reshapes their relationship, steering the narrative toward an exploration of morality and the fallout of one’s deeds.

Performance Highlights

The acting stands out as one of Maareesan’s strongest assets. Fahadh Faasil delivers a nuanced portrayal of Dhayalan, letting the con‑artist’s evolution unfold gradually and convincingly. His subtle facial cues and precise timing lend depth to a role that could have easily become flat. Vadivelu, typically associated with comedy, surprises with a poignant, restrained performance as the Alzheimer‑afflicted Velayudham, infusing the character with raw honesty. The chemistry between Faasil and Vadivelu feels authentic and compelling, making their on‑screen bond both believable and emotionally resonant.

Box‑Office and Streaming Reception

The film opened modestly on July 25, 2025, pulling in roughly ₹3.53 crore net across India during its opening weekend—₹0.75 crore on Friday, ₹1.37 crore on Saturday, and ₹1.39 crore on Sunday. Despite favorable reviews from critics, its total domestic net settled at about ₹6.55 crore. The picture found a far wider audience after its Netflix debut on August 22, 2025, when it became accessible in Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada. It quickly rose into Netflix’s Top 10 list and maintains an IMDb rating of 7.5.

Key Takeaways

Maareesan follows a petty thief and an elderly Alzheimer’s patient on a road journey that turns into a quest for retribution.

Fahadh Faasil shines as Dhayalan, whose motivations shift as the plot progresses.

Vadivelu offers a powerful, emotionally charged turn away from his usual comic fare.Though its theatrical earnings were modest, the film exploded in popularity on Netflix, securing a spot among the platform’s trending titles.

Beyond a simple road‑trip, the movie weaves a layered tale about redemption, justice, and the unlikely connections that can form between strangers.
