Venice Film Festival 2025: Historic Win for Anuparna Roy, Dwayne Johnson’s Film Honored

The 2025 edition of the Venice International Film Festival turned out to be a memorable year for global cinema, particularly for India. As the prestigious event concluded on September 6, filmmaker Anuparna Roy etched her name in history by receiving the Best Director Award in the Orizzonti section. At the same time, Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson’s much-publicized film also secured a major win, making this year’s festival one to remember.

The festival, which began on August 27, showcased some of the finest films from across the globe. World premieres, thought-provoking stories, and artistic brilliance defined the ten-day celebration, which culminated with the announcement of coveted awards.

India had a landmark moment this year through Anuparna Roy’s victory for her film Songs of Forgotten Trees. The feature follows the lives of two immigrant women from Mumbai, exploring their struggles, search for belonging, and resilience in the face of isolation. Roy’s win is being widely celebrated as a milestone for Indian cinema on an international stage.

The festival’s top honor, the Golden Lion for Best Film, went to veteran American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch for Father Mother Sister Brother. In his acceptance speech, Jarmusch emphasized that he views cinema not as a contest, but as an artistic expression. He also described Venice, with its deep cultural and historical roots, as his “second home.”

Another highlight came in the form of Benny Safdie’s film The Smashing Machine, which won the Silver Lion. The project drew particular attention because of Dwayne Johnson, who played the lead role. Safdie, reflecting on the recognition, said the film was his attempt to emphasize compassion and humanity in a world that often overlooks these values. He warmly acknowledged Johnson as a true partner in bringing the story to life.

Beyond these headline wins, several other awards were also presented:

  • Best Actor: Toni Servillo (La Grazia)
  • Best Actress: Xin Zhilai (The Sun Rises on Us All)
  • Marcello Mastroianni Award: Luna Welder (Silent Friend)
  • Special Jury Prize: Below the Clouds
  • Audience Award: Cale Malaga
  • Best Screenplay: A Pied d’Oeuvre
  • Best Documentary: Mata Hari

With its mix of international recognition, landmark achievements, and heartfelt acceptance moments, the 2025 Venice Film Festival reaffirmed why it remains one of the most influential stages in the world of cinema.
