"The Trial" S2 Review: Kajol and Sonali Kulkarni Shine in this Courtroom Drama

The much-awaited The Trial Season 2 has finally premiered on JioHotstar today (September 19). Featuring stars like Kajol, Jisshu Sengupta, Sonali Kulkarni, Alyy Khan and Sheeba Chaddha, the web series returns after the success of its first season. While Season 1 was helmed by Suparn Verma, the director’s baton for the second season has been passed on to Umesh Bist, who attempts to take the gripping story of Noyonika forward.

Story

Season 2 seamlessly picks up from where the first installment ended. The narrative continues to revolve around Noyonika Choudhary (Kajol), who is now an established lawyer working alongside Vishal Chaubey (Alyy Khan), Malini Khanna (Sheeba Chaddha) and Param Munjal (Karanvir Sharma). Parallel to her professional success, her personal life remains complicated.

Her husband Rajiv Sengupta (Jisshu Sengupta), who has stepped into the political arena, contests elections against the strong-willed politician Narayani Dhole (Sonali Kulkarni). The drama begins with a tense family moment when their younger daughter Anaira suffers a panic attack due to her parents’ constant conflicts. Their elder daughter Ananya also becomes deeply resentful, forcing Noyonika and Rajiv to reconsider their marriage for the sake of their children.

As months pass, Noyonika continues to take up challenging legal cases, but political power games, betrayals, and strained relationships complicate her journey. The major question Season 2 raises is: Will Noyonika forgive Rajiv for his past betrayals, or will she finally take a stand against him?

Performances

If there’s one thing that stands out in The Trial Season 2, it’s the performances. Kajol delivers a commanding performance as Noyonika, bringing the right mix of strength, vulnerability, and confidence. Her screen presence and dialogue delivery make her courtroom appearances highly convincing.

On the other hand, Sonali Kulkarni steals the show as Narayani Dhole. She portrays a shrewd, calculating and power-hungry leader with brilliance. Her performance adds intensity to the political subplot, making her a perfect foil to Noyonika.

Supporting actors also leave an impression — Jisshu Sengupta is effective as Rajiv, Alyy Khan and Sheeba Chaddha fit their roles perfectly, while Kubbra Sait delivers some of the most emotional moments of the season. A special mention must be given to veteran actor Asrani, whose cameo leaves a lasting impact.

Behind the scenes

Visually, the series benefits from strong cinematography by Kuldeep Mamania, with most sequences shot at real locations. The visuals feel authentic and immersive, capturing the essence of courtroom and political drama. However, the editing by Khushboo Raj feels stretched, with each episode running longer than necessary. A tighter edit of 10–15 minutes per episode could have elevated the overall pacing.

The dialogues, written by Niranjan Iyengar, Amit Raj and Khushboo Raj, are well-suited to the genre and provide the required dramatic depth. While the core storyline has potential, some weak subplots and unconvincing case resolutions hold the show back from reaching its full potential.

Final Verdict

Overall, The Trial Season 2 is a mixed bag. While the storytelling occasionally falters, the powerful performances — especially by Kajol and Sonali Kulkarni — make it worth a watch. Umesh Bist’s direction ensures that the series maintains its emotional intensity, though a sharper screenplay and tighter editing would have made it far more impactful.

If you’re a fan of courtroom dramas or simply want to see Kajol in one of her most compelling roles, The Trial Season 2 on JioHotstar deserves a spot on your watchlist.
