National Geographic Documentary Films has officially secured the worldwide distribution rights to The Tale of Silyan, the latest work from acclaimed filmmaker Tamara Kotevska, best known for her Academy Award-nominated documentary Honeyland. Produced in collaboration with Concordia Studio, The Corner Shop, and Ciconia Film, the announcement marks an important milestone for this internationally celebrated project.

North Macedonia has selected The Tale of Silyan as its official submission in the International Feature Film category for the upcoming 98th Academy Awards. The documentary has already garnered impressive recognition, claiming the Best Film – Cinema and Arts Award at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, and drawing acclaim during its recent screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Storyline: A Moving Blend of Reality and Folklore
Set against the striking landscapes of rural North Macedonia, The Tale of Silyan tells the story of Nikola, a struggling farmer caught between shifting government policies and an uncertain economic future. After his family migrates abroad in search of stability, Nikola takes a job as a landfill worker. There, his path crosses with an injured white stork, whom he names Silyan.
Their relationship becomes the emotional center of the film—an intimate and symbolic bond between man and nature. Woven into this narrative is a traditional North Macedonian folktale, which enriches the documentary with lyrical, almost mythical depth. At its heart, the film explores urgent themes such as climate change, economic migration, resilience, and the profound healing power of human connections with the natural world.
Release Strategy and Global Debut
National Geographic Documentary Films will premiere The Tale of Silyan across major international film festivals before heading to theaters. The documentary will later make its global streaming debut on Disney+, enabling viewers worldwide to experience this powerful story.
The Creative Team Behind the Film
The film is produced by Tamara Kotevska alongside Jean Dakar, who also serves as cinematographer, Anna Hashmi of The Corner Shop, and Jordanco Petkovski. Executive producers include Academy Award-winner Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth), Laurene Powell Jobs, Casey Meurer, and Lizzie Fox under the banner of Concordia Studio. Editing was led by Martin Ivanov, with original music composed by Joe Wilson Davies and HunOuk Park. The deal was finalized with the support of UTA Independent Film Group.
