Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is stepping back into familiar territory with his latest project, Disclosure Day. Universal Pictures has officially released the first teaser for the highly anticipated sci-fi thriller, promising a suspense-filled exploration into the possibility that humanity is not alone in the universe.

Since its announcement, Disclosure Day has been wrapped in secrecy, with Spielberg and his team keeping plot details under tight control. The newly released trailer offers only a glimpse at what’s to come — and while it raises more questions than it answers, it’s clear this is a return to the director’s signature alien storytelling.

The film stars Emily Blunt as a poised television news anchor whose calm on-air demeanor is shattered when she appears to be overtaken by a mysterious force. Her character begins speaking in an otherworldly language, hinting at an extraterrestrial influence. The teaser then shifts to Josh O’Connor’s character, a man who seems to hold critical knowledge about the unfolding events — and who is determined to reveal the truth to “seven billion” people across the globe.

Disclosure Day arrives in theaters on June 12, 2026, and features a star-studded cast including Blunt, O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. Spielberg directs from a screenplay by David Koepp, whose previous credits include Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The official synopsis poses a provocative question:

“If you discovered we weren’t alone — if someone proved it to you — would you be afraid? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. The countdown begins… to Disclosure Day.”

In an earlier interview with The Playlist, Josh O’Connor hinted that Disclosure Day will evoke Spielberg’s earlier sci-fi masterpieces, such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. While the director has focused more on historical dramas in recent years — including Bridge of Spies and The Post — this new project appears to blend those dramatic sensibilities with the awe and tension of his most iconic alien stories.

O’Connor described the film as “old-school Spielberg,” suggesting fans can expect a nostalgic yet fresh cinematic experience. Based on the first teaser, Disclosure Day is poised to be a high-stakes, emotionally charged exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos — and the consequences of uncovering the ultimate truth.
