A Radical Experiment in Hidden Living: The Rise of the Secret Mall Apartment

In an era where housing costs continue to climb and urban development displaces long-standing communities, the need for alternative living solutions has never been more urgent. Amid rising rents and shrinking personal freedom, people are exploring unconventional ways to reclaim space, autonomy, and dignity. One of the most extraordinary stories to emerge from this cultural shift is captured in Netflix’s 2024 documentary Secret Mall Apartment — a fascinating true tale of artistry, stealth, and quiet resistance.

This isn’t just a story about shelter. It’s a deeply human narrative about creativity triumphing over corporate expansion, and how one group of artists turned overlooked architecture into a sanctuary — and a statement.

From Displacement to Defiance: The Birth of a Secret Home

The film traces back to 2003, when Providence, Rhode Island, underwent major urban renewal. The historic Eagle Square district — a vibrant hub for local artists — was demolished to make way for the 1.4-million-square-foot Providence Place mall. For many residents, the new development symbolized economic exclusion, catering more to tourists than to the working-class community already there.

Among those displaced was Michael Townsend, an artist with a bold vision. While exploring the newly built mall, Townsend noticed a forgotten junction of unused space — a void between structural elements, invisible to foot traffic and security alike. What others saw as wasted square footage, he saw as opportunity.

Teaming up with fellow creatives Colin Bliss, Adrian Valdez Young, Andrew Oesch, Greta Scheing, James Mercer, Emily Ustach, and Jay Zehngebot, Townsend began covertly transforming the space into a livable apartment. Over time, they constructed walls from cinder blocks, installed furniture, tapped into nearby power sources, and even added creature comforts like a TV and gaming console — all without detection.

Their hidden abode, stretching roughly 750 square feet, became both a refuge and a long-term performance piece — an act of artistic rebellion disguised as survival.

Art as Resistance: Living Off the Grid in Plain Sight

Secret Mall Apartment presents more than an engineering feat — it’s a meditation on how art can reclaim public space and challenge systemic inequities. Living rent-free wasn’t just about financial convenience; it was a symbolic reclamation of space lost to gentrification.

While based in the mall, the collective continued producing impactful artwork — contributing to a poignant 9/11 memorial in New York and creating large-scale tape murals in children’s hospitals, often volunteering their time and talent. The apartment served as their creative war room, a place to decompress and dream beyond the mall’s commercial confines.

Their work remained anonymous, yet deeply felt — much like their existence within the mall itself.

The Inevitable Discovery and Lasting Legacy

In 2007, authorities uncovered the hidden unit. Townsend was cited for trespassing and removed from the space. Yet, the story didn’t end there. Instead, it gained mythic status — a testament to ingenuity and the enduring spirit of underground art.

The documentary showcases how each member of the collective continues to work in creative fields today, carrying forward the ethos that shaped their secret life. Meanwhile, Providence Place now faces financial instability and is under state receivership — an ironic twist highlighting how temporary corporate ventures can falter, while authentic creativity endures.

Why You Should Watch Secret Mall Apartment on Netflix

More than just a quirky true story, Secret Mall Apartment delivers a powerful message: when systems fail, imagination can become the ultimate form of resistance. It’s a feel-good yet thought-provoking watch, perfect for anyone seeking inspiration, alternative lifestyles, or a deeper understanding of art’s role in social change.

If you’re intrigued by urban exploration, DIY culture, or stories of quiet defiance, this Netflix documentary is a must-stream.
