Scorsese Taps Familiar Face for New Psychological Thriller What Happens at Night

Martin Scorsese is once again tapping into his circle of trusted collaborators for his latest cinematic venture. Reports confirm that Welker White, a veteran actress with a long-standing history with the Academy Award-winning director, has officially boarded the cast of the upcoming Apple Studios production, What Happens at Night.

According to Deadline, this project marks another chapter in the professional relationship between Welker White and Scorsese. The duo has previously worked together on some of the director’s most iconic films, including GoodFellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman, and the more recent Killers of the Flower Moon. While her specific character remains under wraps, her addition bolsters a high-profile ensemble already generating significant industry buzz.

A Star-Studded Ensemble Under Apple Studios

What Happens at Night features a powerhouse lineup led by industry heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris.

Welker White’s inclusion adds further depth to the production, drawing on her extensive screen experience. Beyond her recurring work with Scorsese, she has appeared in acclaimed titles such as Dead Poets Society, Bad Education, and The Forty-Year-Old Version. She is also set to appear in the upcoming Keanu Reeves-led film Outcome, directed by Jonah Hill for Apple.

Adapting the Mystery of Peter Cameron’s Novel

The film serves as an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name. The narrative follows an unnamed American couple who travel to a remote, snow-drenched European town with the intention of adopting a child. Upon arrival, they check into a nearly deserted hotel, where they encounter a series of enigmatic locals who challenge their sanity and intentions.

While official character descriptions are limited, the source material offers clues. Mads Mikkelsen is rumored to portray Brother Emmanuel, a faith healer, while Patricia Clarkson and Jared Harris are expected to play a chanteuse and a mysterious businessman, respectively, whom the couple encounters during their stay.

Production Timeline and Release Expectations

Principal photography for the thriller reportedly commenced this February in Prague. The production is expected to transition to New York for later stages of filming. Scorsese is directing and producing the project under his Sikelia Productions banner, alongside producers Daniel Lupi, Jennifer Lawrence, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film marks the second major partnership between Scorsese and Apple following the success of Killers of the Flower Moon. While Apple and StudioCanal have yet to announce a firm debut, the current production trajectory suggests a possible 2027 release date.
