Suriya is back, and he’s not just back – he’s better than ever. In Karthik Subbaraj’s gripping action drama, Retro, the acclaimed actor delivers a powerhouse performance that is already earning rave reviews from fans and critics alike. This isn’t just another action flick; it’s a masterclass in blending high-octane thrills with deeply emotional storytelling, creating a cinematic experience that’s both stylish and profoundly moving.

Story

Suriya plays Paarivel Paari Kannan, a former gangster attempting to leave his violent past behind for the sake of his wife, Rukmini (Pooja Hegde). His vow to a life free of violence is shattered when his past catches up with him, forcing him to confront the demons he fought so hard to bury. The narrative cleverly weaves together action sequences, emotional depth, and powerful moments that keep the audience captivated from beginning to end.

Performances

Suriya’s performance is nothing short of exceptional. He masterfully portrays the internal struggle of a man grappling with his violent past, conveying both the intensity of his hardened exterior and the vulnerability hidden beneath. Pooja Hegde delivers a strong and graceful performance as Rukmini, holding her own against Suriya’s powerful portrayal. The supporting cast, featuring a stellar ensemble including Jayaram, Joju George, Prakash Raj, and Nassar, adds significant weight and depth to the narrative. Each actor contributes to the film’s overall richness, enriching the already compelling story.

Behind the scenes

Director Karthik Subbaraj displays his signature flair, seamlessly blending stylized action sequences with moments of raw emotion. The film’s retro theme, beautifully brought to life by cinematographer Shreyaas Krishna, gives Retro a distinctive visual appeal that elevates the overall viewing experience. Santhosh Narayanan’s music and background score add a further layer of impact, imbuing the film with both soul and exhilarating energy.

Final Verdict

Retro is much more than just an action film; it’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of a compelling narrative. It’s a solid comeback for Suriya, showcasing his remarkable versatility and reaffirming his status as one of Tamil cinema’s leading stars. The film sets a high benchmark for the months to come, raising the bar for action dramas in the industry. If you are looking for a thrilling action film with a heart, Retro is a must-watch cinematic experience. It’s a stylish, emotional rollercoaster that cements Suriya’s legacy and promises a bright future for Tamil cinema.
