Dating can be challenging—but in Prime Video’s gripping new psychological drama The Girlfriend, it becomes downright dangerous.
This month, Prime Video confirmed the series will premiere exclusively on the platform September 10, 2025, with all six episodes dropping at once—no weekly waits. Better still, the binge-ready season will launch in over 240 countries and territories worldwide on day one.
Starring Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke, The Girlfriend adapts Michelle Frances’ bestselling novel into a taut exploration of fractured family bonds and warped realities. The screen adaptation was helmed by Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, with scripts from a writers’ room including Polly Cavendish, Helen Kingston, Marek Horn, Ava Wong Davies, Isis Davis, Smita Bhide, and Matt Evans.
At the heart of the story is Laura (Wright), a woman whose flawless life—lucrative career, doting husband, beloved son Daniel (Laurie Davidson)—begins unraveling when Daniel introduces his enigmatic girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke). From their first meeting, an unsettling tension simmers. Laura grows increasingly convinced Cherry harbors sinister motives, but the series deftly toys with perception: Is Cherry a cunning manipulator, or is Laura’s distrust distorting the truth? Blurring reality and paranoia, the show asks whether truth is absolute—or merely a matter of perspective.
