Lynette (Vanessa Kirby) starts her day like any other, but her evening quickly spirals into a grueling, nightmarish journey in Benjamin Caron’s Night Always Comes. Based on Willy Vlautin’s novel of the same name, this adaptation dives into a woman’s battle against a housing crisis. Caron, along with screenwriter Sarah Conradt, immerses viewers in a night filled with escalating tension, perilous circumstances, dubious individuals, and an unwavering resolve to achieve her goals. Kirby’s performance stands out as she skillfully portrays the many complexities of Lynette’s life, serving as a profound reminder of the harsh realities faced by countless Americans today. While some clichés emerge, the film remains an intense and immersive experience.

Story

Set over a tumultuous 24-hour period, the crime thriller unveils Lynette’s (Kirby) dire financial predicament. She needs $25,000 for a down payment on a loan from her mother, Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh), to save the family home and protect her older brother, Kenny (Zack Gottsagen), who has Down syndrome. If the house is registered under his name, he won’t have to move to a specialized facility. However, her plans unravel when her mother opts to buy a new car instead. In a desperate bid to raise the money, Lynette races through Portland, relying on every possible favor and encountering unscrupulous characters.

Performances

Kirby, who also produces the film, delivers a deeply moving performance. Her portrayal of Lynette captures her innocence and desperation, leading her to engage in troubling past behaviors, including selling her body. Doreen’s apathetic attitude is skillfully conveyed by Leigh. The film also features a lineup of well-known actors such as Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly, and filmmaker Eli Roth, who present various challenges for Lynette. Stephan James as Cody and Gottsagen as Kenny also give impressive performances.

Behind the scenes

Caron effectively uses Portland’s scenery to highlight a community grappling with economic hardship. With issues like inflation and gentrification causing many residents, including Lynette’s family, to lose their homes, the film starts with a poignant social critique on homelessness and poverty. It quickly morphs into a crime narrative as Lynette stoops to compromising her dignity in her quest for financial relief. She confronts numerous dangerous figures intent on exploiting her, yet she demonstrates resilience and survives each encounter. Night Always Comes is enhanced by its standout performances, which shine despite the predictable plot.

Final Verdict

What sets Night Always Comes apart is its ability to maintain momentum while being both understated and suspenseful. The relatable writing and situations are amplified by Kirby’s emotionally charged performance. The most compelling aspect is Lynette’s fierce dedication to doing what she believes is right for her brother. The film perpetually raises the question of what will happen next, keeping audiences engaged without a clear resolution in sight.

While this film may be challenging to watch, it rewards those who can tolerate its intense subject matter. The theme of a sister striving to assist her brother with disabilities significantly enriches my appreciation for Night Always Comes. Kirby’s portrayal of Lynette’s sacrifices resonates deeply, while Leigh’s performance highlights the mother’s obliviousness. The juxtaposition of a devoted sister against an absent mother creates a complex dynamic that captivates in this poignant narrative.
