Netflix has just unveiled a K-pop-themed animated movie, and it’s an absolute joyride!
So, what happens when you combine K-pop fame, demon-slaying adventures, and breathtaking animation? The answer is Netflix’s exciting new animated film, K-Pop Demon Hunters, which is creating waves from the release day over the weekend. It’s an absolute delight, even for someone who isn’t deeply acquainted with K-pop culture.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, K-Pop Demon Hunters is produced by the same studio responsible for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Netflix’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines. This means the animation in the film is nothing short of spectacular, bursting with vibrant colors and dynamic energy. The storyline is equally thrilling, blending intense action sequences with a soundtrack brimming with original K-pop hits.
The story centers on a trio of megastar K-pop idols—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who dominate the music charts by day and battle demons by night. The plot escalates when the girls confront their most formidable adversaries yet: the Saja Boys, a charming boy band composed of literal demons. It’s not wise enough to delve into the specifics of the boy band’s intentions to avoid spoilers, but even a K-pop novice also could appreciate the film’s clever references to real-life K-pop stars and their passionate fanbases.
In short, this movie clearly reflects the creators’ genuine affection for the genre. It’s also important to note that a K-pop film deserves a catchy, engaging soundtrack. Does this one deliver? K-pop fans will have to decide for themselves.
Several tracks featured in K-Pop Demon Hunters—like the standout songs “Golden” and “Takedown”—could easily compete on real-world music charts alongside established artists. Additionally, members of the popular K-pop girl group TWICE (Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung) contribute their voices to a special rendition of “Takedown,” which plays during the end credits and is currently inspiring a TikTok dance challenge.
As one fan enthusiastically shared on X, “Never a bad song in this entire movie. Absolute cinema. Give me a TV show with 15 seasons and 24-hour-long episodes, along with 27 sequels and prequels, plus a graphic novel!” and can’t say to disagree with that passion.
With its emotional journey of a pop diva discovering her true self and the stunning anime-style visuals, K-Pop Demon Hunters is a dazzling feast of entertainment. that can be thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. It offered pure escapism, and that’s exactly what you hope for from an animated feature!
