ZEE5’s latest Telugu web series Nayanam combines psychological thrills, murder mystery intrigue, and a unique sci-fi twist to deliver an engaging watch. Known for his romantic film roles, Varun Sandesh steps into uncharted territory here, surprising audiences with a layered and unsettling portrayal. Directed by Swathi Prakash, Nayanam isn’t just another whodunit—it’s a genre experiment that blends mystery with speculative elements, making it stand out in the ever-growing world of OTT crime dramas.

Story

Dr. Nayan (Varun Sandesh), an ophthalmologist, has an unusual obsession—he wants to see into the private lives of his patients. Using a special fluid injected into their eyes, Nayan can don his custom-made glasses and watch four minutes of their life unfold in real time. His curiosity takes a dark turn when he spies on Madhavi (Priyanka Jain) and witnesses her killing her husband.

When the police dismiss his claims, Nayan is forced to pursue the truth himself. As the investigation unfolds, he faces cryptic warnings to back off, a tense cat-and-mouse chase, and shocking revelations that reshape everything he thought he knew. The season ends with a major twist, teasing an even darker second chapter.

Performances

Varun Sandesh delivers one of his most impressive performances yet, portraying Nayan’s creepy, obsessive side with convincing subtlety. His transition from romantic hero to morally complex protagonist is refreshing.

Priyanka Jain is magnetic on screen, balancing elegance with a sharp intellect in her portrayal of Madhavi. Ali Reza, as the investigating officer, brings credibility to his role, while veteran actor Uttej offers a standout performance that lingers long after the credits roll.

Director Swathi Prakash ensures each character feels purposeful, extracting strong performances from her cast.

Behind the Scenes

Technically, Nayanam is sleek and well-paced, with each episode clocking in at around 30 minutes—ideal for binge-watching. Crisp editing and atmospheric lighting maintain suspense throughout. Ajay Arasada’s background score heightens tension without overshadowing the narrative, while the sci-fi elements are smartly woven into the murder mystery format.

Swathi Prakash’s directorial debut shows promise, skillfully balancing genre conventions with innovation. While the series occasionally slows down to explore character backstories, it regains momentum after the central crime is revealed, keeping viewers hooked.

Final Verdict

Nayanam is a solid addition to the Telugu OTT space—a pulpy yet inventive thriller that benefits from its unusual sci-fi premise. Despite a slow start and occasional narrative detours, it builds towards a satisfying payoff and leaves audiences curious about what’s next. For Varun Sandesh, this is a career-refreshing role, and for mystery lovers, it’s a binge-worthy pick.

Highly recommended for fans of suspense with a twist.
