Mediocre revenge drama

Some stories get highlighted with some technical excellence and effective screenplay though there is nothing new in the storyline. Some stories get boomeranged due to amateurish handling of story and screenplay though the story has great potential. Meka Suri which is streaming now on Zee5 belongs to the second category without any iota of doubt.

Suri (Abhinay) being a butcher by profession gets ‘Meka’ fixed as his surname by which he gets popular as Meka Suri who kills sheep by biting the neck and drink their blood and runs for 10 km every day for more energy and to keep himself fit. He is in love with Rani (Sumaya Syed) who works as a maid for Appalnaidu (Sharat Kumar) the big wig of the village. The rumours created by Appalanaidu to save himself from disgrace irk Meka Suri making him suspect the character of Rani. He confronts Rani as a result the story takes a U-turn with Suri getting arrested and lodged in jail.

Once Suri is out of jail, he wreaks vengeance for killing Rani and goes on an eliminating spree followed by many unexpected or rather thoughtless twists which leave everyone baffled and confused to figure out the actual rationale behind those series of killings.

The story till the death of Rani goes on well but later it takes different shapes and turns defying the imagination of all in the process. The story writer and director must have got inspired by scores of films on violence and wanted to follow the same formula without giving any heed to content or logic behind these scenes. Its pure torture for 50 minutes leaving the first 36 minutes which are quite passable.

The clueless chase scenes, the sudden infiltration of Naxalite concept, and the transformation of Meka Suri and his characterization in latter parts of the film are bizarre and not less than nerve-racking.

The music by Prajwal Krish (Saroja fame) sounds innovative with some good bits of background score but dominates the proceedings on the screen which are pale and out of focus. As a result, the effort of the music director goes down the drain due to shallow screenplay and incompetent handling of the story.

The mediocre handling of a simple revenge story allowed little scope for other departments like cinematography by Pardhu Saina to do something extraordinary. If the story and its treatment which are the heart and soul of any film are not in a proper place, the other organs or departments fail to function properly as evident in Meka Suri.

Among the artistes, Abhinay and Sumaya have tried their best to save the film from sinking despite several limitations. Other characters fail to make any impression due to poor characterization and presentation.

It’s an out and out avoidable film with nothing to offer except some unwarranted strong language and explicit scenes. The film need not be filled up with gore or raw language to establish a rustic look; it can be done creatively too as done in the case of Rangasthalam the cult movie by Sukumar. Even the raw and rustic look can be shown beautifully if it is treated in a better manner. But when there is a weak story and a heartless narrative, the rustic or raw look flattens out as happened in the case of Meka Suri.

Let’s hope for something better in the second part of Meka Suri.
