K-pop’s rising stars ILLIT have officially stepped into a bold new chapter with the launch of their debut single album, Not Cute Anymore. Known for their sweet and endearing charm since debut, the rookie group has now traded their trademark innocence for a more daring and confident allure—signaling a major shift in both concept and creative direction.
Released on November 24, the centerpiece of the album is the reggae-infused pop track Not Cute Anymore. The song’s stripped-back arrangement allows the members’ conversational vocals to shine, amplifying a hook designed to stick in your head long after listening. More than just a catchy refrain, the track conveys the group’s desire to break free from being labeled solely by their “cute” persona. The lyrics offer listeners a peek into the members’ personal preferences and growing artistic voice, framing this comeback as a statement of identity as much as a musical release.
The single is helmed by renowned producer Jasper Harris, known for his work on Jack Harlow’s U.S. chart-topping hit First Class and contributions to Lil Nas X’s Montero. Singer-songwriters Sasha Alex Sloan and Youra also share writing credits, adding texture and range to the track’s sound palette.
The B-side offering, Not Me, comes from American producing duo Pebbles&TamTam, best recognized for the viral sensation Pink Like Suki. Injecting high-energy pop sensibilities, the track includes direct lyrical input from members YUNAH, MINJU, and MOKA, enhancing the authenticity and emotional connection of the release.
Accompanying the album, ILLIT unveiled a vibrant and humor-laced music video dramatizing their “breakup” with cuteness. In a tongue-in-cheek sequence, the group stands before a pink tombstone etched with CUTE IS DEAD, diving headfirst into absurd adventures—including face-offs with deceptively adorable creatures and a sports-car chase culminating in comedic arrests. Between fantasy-rich visuals, synchronized stone-faced dance moves, and bursts of slapstick humor, the video captures the group’s playful spirit while showcasing a more mature performance edge.
Visually, styling takes center stage in this transformation. The members shift fluidly between kitschy, chic, and effortlessly cool aesthetics. Ironically, traces of charm still peek through—adding layers of complexity to the “anti-cute” narrative and reinforcing that their evolution is about expansion, not erasure.
Choreography teases within the video hint at dynamic live performances ahead, with stand-out “killing moments” such as synchronized poses atop a disco ball, rhythmic head-bobbing sequences, and beat-driven gestures sure to energize upcoming stages.
With Not Cute Anymore, ILLIT not only redefines their image but also solidifies their artistic ambition. This comeback proves that while their initial charm captured hearts, their potential to innovate and surprise may be their most exciting asset yet.
