Michelin-starred chef and television powerhouse Gordon Ramsay is stepping behind the camera for his new Apple TV+ documentary series, Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars. The eight-episode production, executive produced by Ramsay, captures the intense journey of restaurants around the world as they chase one of the culinary industry’s most prestigious honors — the Michelin star.

Premiering this Friday, the series takes viewers into renowned kitchens across the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Nordics, and Mexico, spotlighting chefs and restaurateurs striving to earn or maintain Michelin recognition. The documentary promises a raw and emotional portrayal of the ambition, creativity, and relentless pressure behind fine dining excellence.

Ramsay, who has earned multiple Michelin stars throughout his career, describes the project as an authentic portrayal of life in professional kitchens. “It’s a very real look at what actually happens in these businesses — the stakes, the risks, and above all, the emotions,” Ramsay told Reuters. Comparing the culinary world to other high-stakes professions, he added, “Actors dream of Oscars, footballers dream of trophies, and chefs dream of Michelin stars.”

The series follows host Jesse Burgess as he visits talented chefs meticulously crafting tasting menus and perfecting each dish for that one elusive diner — who just might be a secret Michelin inspector. In a rare twist, Knife Edge also features commentary from anonymous Michelin inspectors, whose identities remain carefully hidden even from the producers. Their voiceovers, performed by actors, offer an inside glimpse into how these experts assess the world’s best cuisines.

The Michelin Guide, originally published by the French tire company in 1900, began its star rating system in the 1920s. Today, earning even a single star can transform a chef’s career overnight. Ramsay’s own journey began when he received his first Michelin star as head chef at London’s Aubergine restaurant. His flagship Restaurant Gordon Ramsay has proudly held three stars since 2001 — a testament to sustained excellence over two decades.

Reflecting on the challenges of maintaining such accolades, Ramsay admits that the pressure never fades. “You’re constantly fighting to keep it. You must delegate, teach, and inspire while leading like a conductor in an orchestra,” he said. And when asked how he’d react to losing a star, Ramsay’s competitive spirit shows: “I’d fight to win it back.”

With Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars, Apple TV+ and Ramsay invite viewers to experience the dedication, artistry, and emotional stakes of those who live and breathe for culinary perfection.
