Golden Globes 2026 Nominations Spark Buzz with Leading Films, Top Series, and Fresh Categories

Hollywood’s awards season is officially underway, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association unveiling the nominees for the 2026 Golden Globe Awards. The ceremony, set to air live on CBS and stream via Paramount+ on January 11, will celebrate both returning favorites and surprising newcomers across film, television, and — for the first time — podcasts and stand-up comedy specials.

Leading this year’s pack is One Battle After Another, a sharply satirical portrayal of a politically fractured society, earning nine nominations. Close contenders include Sentimental Value, a heartfelt family drama, with eight nods, and Sinners, a vampire-themed period thriller set in the segregated U.S. South, with seven nominations.

Film Categories: Divided But Fierce Competition

The Globes recognize dramas separately from musicals and comedies, meaning this year’s top films will battle within their own genres.

  • Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy contenders include One Battle After Another, Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice, and Nouvelle Vague.
  • Best Motion Picture – Drama brings together Sentimental Value, Sinners, Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just an Accident, and The Secret Agent.

In addition to its top film nomination, One Battle After Another scored nods for Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Actress (Chase Infiniti), and supporting roles for Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Teyana Taylor. Anderson’s screenplay and Jonny Greenwood’s score also received recognition. Despite a $200M box office gross, the film’s steep $130M production budget and marketing costs mean it may take a financial loss.

Television: Prestige Drama Meets Comedy Hits

On the TV side, The White Lotus topped the drama categories with six nominations. Adolescence, an innovative crime series filmed in a single continuous shot, followed with five nods. Comedy-mystery Only Murders in the Building and sci-fi thriller Severance earned four nominations each.

  • Best Drama Series: The White Lotus, Severance, The Pitt, Pluribus, The Diplomat, Slow Horses
  • Best Comedy Series: Only Murders in the Building, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Nobody Wants This, The Studio
  • Best Limited Series/Anthology/Motion Picture Made for Television: Adolescence, All Her Fault, The Beast in Me, Black Mirror, Dying for Sex, The Girlfriend

Notably, The White Lotus received acting nominations for Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Aimee Lou Wood, Walton Goggins, and Jason Isaacs. Creator Mike White confirmed the show’s fourth season will be set along the French Riviera.

New Categories Reflect Changing Entertainment Landscape

With the media industry facing streaming shakeups, budget cuts, and sluggish box office sales, the Golden Globes are adapting to modern audiences.

Two standout additions this year include:

  • Best Podcast: Nominees include Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Good Hang With Amy Poehler, The Mel Robbins Podcast, Smartless, and Up First.
  • Best Stand-Up Special: Featuring Bill Maher, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Silverman, Kumail Nanjiani, Kevin Hart, and Brett Goldstein.

Another fresh addition is Best Cinematic or Box Office Achievement, designed to honor commercial successes. Nominees range from mega-hits like F1, Sinners, Weapons, Wicked: For Good, and Zootopia, to less conventional picks including unreleased Avatar: Fire & Ash, streaming sensation KPop Demon Hunters, and the box office flop Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

The Countdown Begins

The nominees were revealed Monday morning by Marlon Wayans and Skye P. Marshall. Comedian Nikki Glaser returns to host for her second consecutive year, promising a lively night celebrating Hollywood’s best.

With fierce competition across genres, unique new categories, and a blend of critical darlings and audience favorites, the 2026 Golden Globe Awards aim to reflect the ever-evolving entertainment industry.
