The Next Chapter: Subtitled and Set
The highly anticipated sequel to Dune: Part Two has been officially titled Dune: Part Three, forgoing the expected Dune Messiah name of Frank Herbert’s source novel. The narrative picks up years after Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) ascent, depicting his tumultuous reign as Emperor. The film will delve into the brutal galactic jihad he has unleashed and the heavy personal and political consequences that follow.
A Conspiracy Against the Emperor
The central plot revolves around a dangerous conspiracy to dethrone Paul. This alliance brings together familiar faces and new players, including Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), the cunning Bene Gesserit sisterhood, and a mysterious new character: Scytale, a shapeshifting Face Dancer portrayed by Robert Pattinson. Scytale’s mission is to compel the powerful Emperor to relinquish his control.
Diverging from the Source Material
Fans of Herbert’s Dune Messiah should prepare for creative deviations. The trailer confirms that Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) will have a role in the film, despite her near-total absence from the second book. These deliberate changes are sure to spark vibrant debate among the fandom about the adaptations’ creative choices.
New Faces On and Off Screen
The cast expands significantly with Anya Taylor-Joy taking on the pivotal role of Paul’s sister, Alia Atreides, after her brief cameo in Part Two. The story will also introduce the children of Paul and Chani (Zendaya): Leto II (Nakoa-Wolf Manoa) and Ghanima (Ida Brooke). Behind the camera, acclaimed cinematographer Greig Fraser passes the baton to Oscar-winner Linus Sandgren (La La Land, Babylon). Based on the stunning trailer, Sandgren is poised to continue the franchise’s tradition of breathtaking visual spectacle.
Villeneuve’s Final Ride on the Sandworm
Although marketed as the “epic conclusion,” the Dune universe extends far beyond this trilogy. While Warner Bros. will likely continue the franchise if Part Three is profitable, director Denis Villeneuve has been clear that this will be his final outing on Arrakis. He is slated to next direct a new James Bond film and the adaptation of the thriller Nuclear War: A Scenario. The question of whether the franchise can thrive without his visionary direction remains, but for now, Dune: Part Three aims to cement this trilogy’s place among the greatest in cinematic history.
Catch Dune: Part Three in theaters on December 18th.
