The suspense‑thriller web series Constable Kanakam premieres today, August 14, on ETV Win OTT. Directed by Prashanth Kumar Dimmala and produced by Kovelamudi Satya Sai Baba and Vemuri Hemanth Kumar, the show features Varsha Bollamma in the titular role, supported by a strong ensemble cast that includes Meghalekha, Rajeev Kanakala, and Srinivas Avasarala among others.

Story

Set in the remote village of Repalle near Srikakulam, the story follows Kanakamahalakshmi (Kanakam), a newly appointed constable who arrives in the hamlet with no acquaintances. She takes lodging at the residence of the head constable, Rajeev Kanakala, and quickly finds herself at odds with senior constable Satthibabu, who attempts to hand the post over to an older officer. An ominous village decree forbids anyone from venturing into the surrounding forest thicket, a rule that coincides with a string of disappearances involving local girls. In a bid to restore hope, the village president (Srinivas Avasarala) organizes a fair.

During the fair, Kanakam’s close friend Chandrika (Meghalekha) quarrels with a man named Babji and disappears that very night. While the authorities—SI and Satthibabu—dismiss the incident, Kanakam refuses to accept the official version. Driven by loyalty, she launches her own investigation to uncover what happened to Chandrika, to the other missing girls, and to the mysterious forest that the villagers fear.

To discover the fate of Chandrika, the truth behind the forest, and who ultimately perpetrates the village’s horror, you’ll have to watch the series unfold.

Performances

Varsha Bollamma, previously known for light‑hearted commercial roles, delivers a compelling portrait of an earnest, determined constable willing to risk everything for a friend. Rajeev Kanakala shines as the seasoned head constable, offering both gravitas and subtle humor. Meghalekha brings warmth and vulnerability to Chandrika, making her disappearance all the more affecting.

Srinivas Avasarala appears surprisingly fresh as a wheelchair‑bound villager, imbuing the character with both pathos and quiet strength. Writer Rakendu Mouli makes a brief but competent appearance, while the actors portraying Satthibabu and the SI provide solid, grounded performances. The supporting cast collectively adds depth to the rural tapestry.

Behind the scenes

The cinematography is one of the series’ strongest assets. Night sequences are rendered with atmospheric lighting, and the two primary locations—the village set and the adjacent forest—are captured with a vivid, almost tactile realism. The background score, especially in the forest scenes, heightens tension and compensates for occasional narrative slack.

However, the series suffers from pacing issues. The editing is uneven, leading to noticeable lag in several episodes; unnecessary beats could have been trimmed to tighten the story. Despite these flaws, production values overall reflect a well‑funded effort.

Final Verdict

Constable Kanakam follows a familiar premise: girls vanish from a remote community, and the official explanation is unsatisfactory. While the plot does not break new ground, the series gains momentum once Kanakam embarks on her personal quest. Her determination injects a fresh emotional core into the otherwise conventional missing‑person thriller.

Some scenes involving Kanakam and Chandrika, gives way for speculation about their relationship without any validation. Likewise, the early episode’s reflection of flashback to a boy’s childhood, was left unresolved in the later stages casting many shadows over the narrative and these unconnected dots leave the viewer baffled.

Constable Kanakam is a competent, if unremarkable, addition to the Indian thriller genre. Its strength lies in Varvara Bollamma’s earnest performance and the atmospheric visual treatment of the rural setting. Though the storyline adheres to well‑trodden tropes and the editing could be sharper, the series offers enough intrigue to keep viewers engaged—especially those interested in a determined heroine’s fight against institutional apathy and hidden evils.
