"Bosch": The highest rated action thriller on Prime that inspired many spinoffs

Prime Video boasts a rich assortment of captivating thrillers, yet one particular series stands out in the genre, having achieved an exceptional Rotten Tomatoes score of nearly perfect at 97%. While this series has concluded, its immense popularity during its airing was significant enough to inspire several esteemed spin-offs.

Among the numerous genres available on Prime Video, it has been gradually establishing itself as a premier destination for what many affectionately refer to as “dad shows.” The platform is home to several blockbuster action thrillers, including Reacher and Jack Ryan, and continues to enhance its reputation by delving deeper into this specific niche.

Recently, Prime Video has expanded its collection with new entries like The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, Countdown, and Butterfly, demonstrating its commitment to thriving in the action thriller arena. Nonetheless, despite the influx of new programming, one series on Prime stands out as a clear frontrunner.

Bosch deviates from the conventional archetype of the morally upright hero. Instead, the series presents its protagonist with all his vulnerabilities and flaws, illustrating the lengths he is willing to go to in order to crack criminal cases. It also emphasizes his belief that the ends justify the means, driven by a deeply flawed sense of justice shaped by his past experiences.

To avoid portraying Bosch merely as an anti-hero, the series ensures that he serves as a champion for those routinely ignored by the justice system. His resistance to modern technology and adherence to traditional police methods lend the character a level of realism and authenticity that resonates strongly with audiences.

Over the course of seven seasons, Titus Welliver’s performance as the titular detective has never faltered, expertly encapsulating the many dimensions of Bosch‘s character. What elevates the show’s characterization is its remarkable consistency, with few contradictions in how Bosch is developed or portrayed throughout the series.

Often hailed as a standout in the thriller category, Amazon Prime Video’s Bosch has rightfully earned this acclaim not through flashy gimmicks, but rather through crafting a narrative that many other thrillers aspire to achieve. It masterfully adheres to the classic detective story structure, utilizing careful pacing and delivering gratifying narrative resolutions along the way. While many thrillers stumble in their follow-up seasons, Bosch has consistently managed to produce one outstanding season after another.

The series showcases immersive storytelling, powerful performances, and relatable character arcs, while also portraying its Los Angeles setting as a character in its own right by shedding light on the city’s less noticed areas. The show skillfully allocates screen time to supporting characters to ensure comprehensive development, allowing all characters the opportunity to shine.

Although Bosch concluded with its seventh season, its impact is enduring, especially through its spin-offs. The first of these, Bosch: Legacy, ran for three seasons and achieved a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. A second spin-off, focused on the character of Detective Renée Ballard, has also garnered critical acclaim.

While there have been no formal announcements regarding the future of Ballard, it seems probable that the series will return to Prime Video for another season. Should that happen, it would be exciting to see Titus Welliver reprise his iconic role as Harry Bosch and become an integral part of Detective Ballard’s crime-solving adventures.
